U2's new video

If anyone hasn't caught U2's video for "Window In the Skies" yet...

I think it's a cool idea, although it seems like something VH1 would show as a promo.

Dug the Bowie part, though.

And did everyone catch the Edge in the audience at the end?

hmm...u2 may have finally made a really cool video. lol they've always made great music but surprisingly, from the band that introduced new media to the tour format, video is not their forte.

It can be.

All the Joshua Tree ones are great.

I really liked the Zooropa ones.

Even some of their straight performance videos are pretty hot.

I think U2's videos have been pretty hit-or-miss, but they do have a handful of great clips...

New Year's Day
Numb
Lemon
Stay
One (the Anton Corbijn version)
Even Better than the Real Thing
Original of the Species
Discotheque
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Mysterious Ways
The Fly
The Sweetest Thing
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

...were all what I'd consider "great" videos.

I think Zooropa and Achtung Baby were the best video eras, which is hardly surprising given that the Zoo TV era was obsessed with visual presentation.

i can't think of a joshua tree video i especially like. achtung had a few cool clips as did zooropa. mostly, though, i think they're boring and that's surpising because they've always known how to use photography to their benefit and the imagery in their live shows is practically unparalleled.

It's cuz they're such a live outfit. Like Prince, many of their videos hinge on their performance.

I love all those early Prince clips, not because they're particularly quality material, but because he's so fucking great to watch.

My favorite videos have to compliment the song enough that, when I hear the song without the video, the two are still associated. Whenever I hear "Mysterious Ways", I picture the Moroccan video. When I hear "New Year's Day", I picture a snowy field, with the band on horses. I can't hear the beginning of "Even Better Than the Real THing" without thinking of Bono spinning in that contraption.

For a lot of U2's videos, though, the video just isn't strong enough to add to the song. Sorry, but U2 singing by the docks isn't the first thing I think about when I hear "Gloria", nor do I think of midgets on a beach when "All I Want is You" plays. And, even decent videos like "If God Will Send His Angels", or "Beautiful Day" really don't add too much to the songs themselves.

So I don't think "Window in the Skies" qualifies as a "great" video, but it is pleasant enough to look at. shrug
