Diana Ross` infamous 1983 Central park concert

"It took me a lifetime to get here, i`m not going anywhere"

Does anyone here on the org have any stories about this concert (the first day)?
Did anyone attend the concert(s) or know anyone who did? Do you remember the publicity she got afterwards?

I have both concerts on dvd, and i`ve read about it in Taraborrelli`s book,
but it it would have been cool to find out more...

Here`s a clip of her singing "Endless love"

The first day of this infamous concert was suppose to be (and should have been) cancel due to a heavy showers & thunderstorm warning. But Diana made the controversial decision for the show to go on in the rain.

I remember watching the reruns of this show on cableTV years ago. It was & still is a great laugh!

lol

I was 4 when it happened but I remember watching it on TV and hearing about it in the news here in NYC and it wasn't just the weather that was a problem but I believe that people also got mugged while waiting for the show to start at Central Park. Plus and someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that money from the show was supposed to go to charity but it didn't. I also believe that it was the last concert to be held in Central Park until Garth Brooks performed there in 1997.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Look @ all her perm getting wasted and shit lol

You gotta give her the credit for having guts to be per4ming under such crucial circumstances, it woulda been safe if she canceled the concert but instead she chose to per4m.

Now thats heart nod

I personaly enjoyed the clip shrug not so much of a Miss Diane the Boss fan, but to her credit if it was somebody elso you know they would cop out. Plus, the audience seemed to enjoy it, isn't that enough? From the way it seems the only motherfuckers who were shaking are the backstage crew.

Anyway, this a perfect case of "damn if she did, damn if she didn't" so I'll leave it at that.

Well if she'd had it in Detroit, where it should have been in the first place, she wouldn't have had that problem! lol

I remember Miss Ross answered a few questions about it in a 1993 Oprah interview.

She conveyed the idea that she would keep the audience safer by not suddenly cancelling or stopping mid-show.

I remember seeing this concert on TV back then.It aired on one of the cable channels (HBO,I think).I remember Diana singing while her manager(?) was trying to convince her to stop the concert immediately...lol...she ignored him and kept on singing. The rain was falling down hard and everyone was getting drenched. She eventually shut down the show, then came back the next day and did it all again. The highlight of this show for me was "All For One and One For All",I was glad to see her do this song.

Thank you all for the great replies thumbs up! I really appreciate it.

and goat2004, it`s so cool to hear from someone who actually was there.

Taraborrelli wrote that it was called "the night New York got mugged" I`ll hve to check the book again for more details. And yeah, about the charity money, the concerts, which were supposed to pay for the park, went over budget, and Ross had to pay for it herself (and was not happy about that...). If i ever get the chance to go to New York, i know i`ll be visiting the "Diana Ross playground"...

Sandra Bernhard made a funny comment about the park a while ago. She said that the park is a place "where children learn to be vicious, backstabbing, and throw their arms up in front of other children"

falloff
