20 Y.O. Not Doing Well; Think Janet will still tour? With 20 Y.O. being her 2nd consecutive underperforming album (i hear the execs at Virgin are pissed with Jermaine), do you all still think Janet will tour in '07 like she was planning to? Might have to come down from the "arenas" if her ego will let her.

I was at Best Buy today and her cd was in the main section not on sale, for $21.99.

I imagine she will tour..for the sake of the money it will bring in. It will be probably an arrangement like Aerosmith. They tour to make $ and even if they released a new album, and it flopped, fans would still flock to see them live. I'm sure the same is true with Janet. So yeah..I'd still bet on a tour in 2007.

I'm sure she'll tour, lets hope people still want to see her live.If its succesful then I think she will tour more often and regularly, maybe like Cher, her commercial career maybe gone, but she may just finish off her years as touring artist

An artist doesn't need a "hit album" to tour.Look at the Rolling Stones. They tour every other year and when was the last time they had a hugely successful CD? Janet just needs to come up with a thrilling, knock em' dead show and the fans will be there. No one will care that her last two albums flopped.

i know an artist doesn't NEED a hit album to tour, but janet has never toured when she DIDN'T have one. she's used to having that aspect to draw in additional fans. not sure if her "core audience" is enough to sell out the arenas. She should definitely change things up a bit and do songs she has never done live.

I was listening to Sirius the other day and their DJs barely talk but it was weird because after playing probably "With U", the guy goes on to slam "20 YO", saying DJ was better but it didn't do well because of the whole Superbowl thing. So are people really seeing this one as even a slight comeback...how did it sell in comparison so far?

Now that her career is at a crossroads, this would be a perfect time to do a big, retrospective Greatest Hits tour to remind people why they became fans in the first place. To make it new and interesting, she should re-vamp many of the old songs with exciting, new arrangements.

it's at about 570,000 sold. but a "gold" album only for janet is a MAJOR disappointment. the wikipedia link someone posted is very thorough and chronicles chart positions for the album and singles here and abroad. your comment about the DJs seems to indicate that the "industry excitement" isn't there for her either. i think she WILL tour because to NOT do so would be to capitulate. she just has to MAKE herself push pass this post Super Bowl ambivalence the public has right now.

20 YO sold about 600,000 US while DJ was nearing 1 million. They were both certified platinum. As a whole I would rather listen to 20 YO all the way through as it flows a lot better than DJ. But DJ overall has stronger songs but way too patchy.

Sad thing is, though, if she tours, I highly doubt she will be doing any of those songs, which is a major let down! [Edited 12/19/06 9:13am]

Actually,Janet's mistake was relying on Jermaine in the first place. He tried to position her as an "urban" R&B princess with midtempo hip-hop beats In the process,he alienated her pop/dance music fans.

Why be pissed at Jermaine? Could he help it that the general public has spoken loud & clear that they could care less about a new Janet Jackson cd? This doesn't have anything to do with the Superbowl, the Christians & conservatives pissed about SB could not have been Janet Jackson fans in the very first place. So, that excuse is null & void. The opening week...she had Oprah, promo commercials, countless mag covers, #1 R&B single, different cd editions...all that & failed to move 300k in sales!!??!!! Damita Jo did nearly 400k with less promo & only one album edition!! She doesn't sell on iTunes, there's no demand from radio listeners....Billboard performance did next to nothing for sales the next week...while every other performer benefitted significantly...and she was the opener! It doesn't get any more clearer than that. Janet Jackson = who cares? The public has spoken.

i agree that jermaine should not be blamed. the lines between urban/pop/dance were blurred a LONG time ago. with janet's help no less. the promotion was there (minus the MTV machine i might add; and radio is a joke) but the public is just lukewarm on her and as much as i'd like it to, doesn't seem like that will change. she has to be very creative and strategic and sadly she seems to think that means to show more T & A. it's too bad the Velvet Rope already came out, that the closest thing to the type of album she needs right now IMO.

Had 20 JOkes been a good album with two or three hit singles, the public would have come right back to her. Unfortunately 20 JOkes was largely crap and people stayed away. Simpled as that. She needs to make a good album again and she'll win back her public. It's not exactly a creative stretch for her (she doesn't write any of her music, just her increasingly banal lyrics), more an exercise in good taste and judgement over market forces. And she does need to ditch the dwarf. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Even if 20 YO was a hit, I don't think that Janet would be a huge tour draw. I saw her twice on the AFY tour, and once on the TVR tour, and all three times the arenas weren't even close to being full. Hell, when we saw her on the TVR tour, we bought tickets the night before the show and had quite a selection of tickets available. We bought crappier seats, and when we got to the show we were escorted by her people into the better seats that weren't sold.
I remember hearing reports circa AFY tour that the HBO show (The Hawaii one) didn't sell very well, and that they had to move people around so it would look like more people were there. Besides, 20 YO is more of the same, so why wouldn't we be led to believe that the show won't be her third retread of the "janet." tour? She just has to come up with a new costume for the whimsical segment, choke up those crocodile tears for Again/Come Back to Me, and pick a member of her entourage to hide in the audience for her striptease act. Voila! Janet live 2007. I should get a cut of the profits, and be credited as her "tour director". I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

I've seen Janet the most out of I’ve seen Janet so many times I think I’ve lost count and I wasn’t that impressed with the AFY Tour. Even though the earlier songs are great I just don’t want to hear/see them performed again. But the new stuff I’m not that crazy about so there’ll only be a handful of songs in the middle that I might really enjoy If, What About, TTWLG and a few others. Wish I could get a review before I bought tickets especially if they’re going to be expensive. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off
