Vinyl vs CD

Is it just me, or does music sound MUCH better coming from an old record player?
I was listening to an lp, and later i heard one of the same songs on cd, and i realized that it`s a whole different sound.

Know what i mean???

I'll take a nice properly mastered CD any time.

You CAN make the tracks sound like they do on vinyl, it's just that you have to master the correct way. For example, when Phil Spector remastered all the old tracks for Best of the Ronettes, he made them all sound like shit. I have an old Italian import CD that is actually mastered properly and the tracks sound like they did on the 45's from the 1960's.

It's simply called "Greatest Hits". It has really cheap design and everything, but the best mastering of the tracks I've ever heard. There is also one for The Crystals.

Unfortunatly I'm to young to have a grasp of vinyl. sad

Guess the most vinyl related stuff I have are some rips in mp3 of the first of the Brides of Funkenstein

Since moving from my place in Detroit and packing it all away, I haven't bothered to dig it out again.

I used to buy tons of it, but I haven't in 3 years probably. The time has passed for me, I'm afraid.

I prefer vinyl over cds. Just the beauty of watching a record play is an amazing experience, but I could really need some better speakers..

I appreciate the vinyl on occassion. In fact i'm waiting for some to come in the mail.

Sadly i don't have a record shop in the area. Usually flea markets or from the consignment shop.

That's a part of the problem. I suggest purchasing some quality MONITORS (not speakers) a quality amp and say a sonic maximizer 442 and u won't hear your music the same EVER again.

The problem with vinyl is that, while they are romantic, they are not fucking practical! lol

This brings up a question I have always wondered about. Is mastering an issue when it comes to vinyl or does it only become one when putting it on CD? In other words, poorly mastered albums sound like crap on CD but doesn't vinyl sound better in that regard?

Man I miss records lol

I like the compression of vinyl. It's a warmer feel when listened 2 on a good stereo system. But I agree that CD's/MP3's r much more user-friendly.

Mastering is ALWAYS an issue. You can't put shit somewhere and expect it to turn into gold.

The bottom line is a lot of the early CD issues had shitty mastering and so people think CD sounds like shit because of that.

They both have their good points. As far as sound goes, I've always preferred the sound of vinyl.

CDs have their convenience though. I like to mix and CDs are easier to cue than vinyl. With CDs, if you fuck up when fading in a song while listening through the headphones, you can just hit that "cue" button and it will go right back to where you originally cued it. With vinyl, you have to find the spot you originally had cued through the headphones.

Tell the truth, child nod

I'm a practical chic myself, I need my music with me in my purse,,,,and that BIG HEAVY stuff ain't gonna do it, maybe for the house but not outdoors.

So yeah, CDs nod the smaller/lighter the better.

That's why you should record your records on either cassettes, or these days, CDs. That way, you can take your music with you and still have the original at the house to play on a big powerful system that will shake the walls as well as asses. lol

That's the truth right there. I replaced all of my Paisley Park albums with CDs and the early ones sound horrible. I would much rather listen to the vinyl copies for those--if I didn't sell them already. mad

I still prefer listening to club remixes on vinyl though. The rumbling of the needle on the record gives the illusion of a fuller, smoother sound.

When CD burners came around, I started feeling kind of the same way about CDs that I used to feel about cassettes in the 1980s. I don't feel like I have an "official" release because it's on a format that you can record yourself. You can't record on no vinyl yourself. lol

This is why I have no time for vinyl - it is so unwieldy. I'm lazy. Okay, so I have to start this thing spinning with just the right amount of needle drop to get it to sound GREAT. And then once that fucker gets scratched, there's no going back. And then you have to buy a new needle if you are playing the fuck out of something. And you can't bring it in your car or to the gym.....
