Can't Rember This Song!

There is a pretty obscure song that I have been trying to remember but I have no idea what the song title is.
I think its from a guy who was a one-hit wonder and its from either the late seventies or early eighties.
The song is about some guy who was pining for this woman some time ago and he eventually met up with her again and the feelings and memories come rushing back to him. I am not quite sure where he said that he had met up with her again some time later, possibly during New Year's(not really sure though). He really goes into a whole narrative about this woman and himself. The song is very mellow with the focus of it being stricly on him and the storytelling lyrics.

I don't know much more about it than that so I suppose the whole thing sounds pretty vague but I tried to remember as much as I could. I think it might also be about how they both have moved on and found other people in their lives but just come across each other again in a (not to sure)chance meeting.

Please chime in if you think you may have a hunch as to what song this could be.

Its not a great song by any means but I really do enjoy the storytelling aspect to it all.

My only guess is Isaac Hayes' cover of By the Time I get to Phoenix.
We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

No, it is defiantely not that song. The song that I am talking about certainly does not have any of the soulful or funk elements of an Issac Hayes song. Its the kind of song that you would probably hear on some easy-listening station and its certainly nowhere near as known or popular as the Issac Hayes song.

Thank you very much though for your guess, I do appreciate it.

Could it be "How Much I Feel" by Ambrosia? That song has an interesting verse that goes:

How's your life been going on?
I got a wife and years we've been going strong
Oh no...there's just something that I've got to say
Sometimes when we make love,I can still see your face
Ooh,just trying to recall when we were as one

hmmm

No, thats not it either, but I have to thank you so much for making me remember that song by Ambrosia. I really LOVE THAT SONG!
I suppose that the song that I am thinking of is in sort of the same vain as this one except its even more mellow and not with a real catchy chorus like the Ambrosia song. Like I said its really a song that you dont listen to for any groove or anything(it really doesnt even have a groove) but you listen to for the lyrics.

But once again, thanks so much for making me remember about that Ambrosia song. I am going to listen to it on the computer right now!

Not sure about that but its certainly possible that it is one of the lyrics in the song. I wanna say that it does sound familar.
There may also be some lyrics about them meeting in a supermarket perhaps. Again not quite sure.

I know the song but it's not coming to me, keep hearing the England Dan (...See You Tonight) song instead.
Think they sit in a car and talk...probably a chevy. Now I'll have this on my mind until someone gets it.

since you mentioned England Dan...

could it be "It's Sad To Belong" by England Dan and John Ford Coley?

It's sad to belong to someone else
when the right one comes along
Yeah it's sad to belong to someone else
when the right one comes along

hmmm

Is it "Louise" by The Human League?

When he saw her getting off the bus
It seemed to wipe away the years
Her face was older, just a little rough
But her eyes were still so clear
He drank his coffee and he hurried out
Across before she walked away
Then he approached her like a little child
Too scared for what he had to say

"Hello, Louise,
Remember me?
Now should we part
Or stay awhile?
As if we were still lovers"

She took a moment just to recognise
The man she'd known so well before
And as he started to apologise
Lose any bitterness she bore
She gently put her finger on his lips
To let him know she understood
And with her suitcase standing on the floor
Embraced him like a lover would

He told Louise
"You look so good
It's just you see
You make me feel
As if we were still lovers"

It's not always true that time heals all wounds
There are wounds that you don't wanna heal
the memories of something really good
something truly real, that you never found again

And though they talked for just a little time
Before she said she had to go
He saw the meeting as a tiny sign
That told him all he had to know

And so Louise
Waved from the bus
And as she left
She gave that smile
As if they were still lovers
I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Its not either 'Sad To Belong' or 'Louise'.

'Sad To Belong' is a bit too upbeat and country sounding and its not a song by Human League. I have a very strong feeling that its a single artist and not a group and I really want to say that the guy was a one-hit wonder as I certainly cannot attach a famous artist's name to his voice.

Taxi by Harry Chapin?

It was raining hard in 'Frisco,
I needed one more fare to make my night.
A lady up ahead waved to flag me down,
She got in at the light.
"Oh, where you going to, my lady blue?"
"It's a shame you ruined your gown in the rain."
She just looked out the window, and said,
"Sixteen, Parkside Lane."

Something about her was familiar,
I could swear I'd seen her face before.
But she said, "I'm sure you're mistaken."
And she didn't say anything more.

It took a while, but she looked in the mirror,
And she glanced at the license for my name.
A smile seemed to come to her slowly,
It was a sad smile, just the same.
And she said, "How are you Harry?"
I said, "How are you Sue?"
Through the too many miles and the too little smiles,
I still remember you."

It was somewhere in a fairy tale,
I used to take her home in my car.
We learned about love in the back of the Dodge,
The lesson hadn't gone too far.
You see, she was gonna be an actress,
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off to find the sky.

Oh, I've got something inside me,
To drive a princess blind.
There's a wild man, wizard,
He's hiding in me, illuminating my mind.
Oh, I've got something inside me,
Not what my life's about,
Cause I've been letting my outside tide me,
Over 'till my time, runs out.

Baby's so high that she's skying,
Yes she's flying, afraid to fall.
I'll tell you why baby's crying,
Cause she's dying, aren't we all.

There was not much more for us to talk about,
Whatever we had once was gone.
So I turned my cab into the driveway,
Past the gate and the fine trimmed lawns.
And she said we must get together,
But I knew it'd never be arranged.
And she handed me twenty dollars,
For a two fifty fare, she said,
"Harry, keep the change."

Well another man might have been angry,
And another man might have been hurt,
But another man never would have let her go...
I stashed the bill in my shirt.

And she walked away in silence,
It's strange, how you never know,
But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for,
Such a long, long time ago.

You see, she was gonna be an actress,
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off for the sky.

And here, she's acting happy,
Inside her handsome home.
And me, I'm flying in my taxi,
Taking tips, and getting stoned,

I go flying.....
.....so high,
.....when I'm stoned

Or maybe Same Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg?

Met my old lover in the grocery store,
The snow was falling Christmas Eve.
I stole behind her in the frozen foods,
And I touched her on the sleeve.

She didn't recognize the face at first,
But then her eyes flew open wide.
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse,
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand,
The food was totalled up and bagged.
We stood there lost in our embarrassment,
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two,
But couldn't find an open bar.
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store,
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.

She said she'd married her an architect,
Who kept her warm and safe and dry,
She would have liked to say she loved the man,
But she didn't like to lie.

I said the years had been a friend to her,
And that her eyes were still as blue.
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw,
Doubt or gratitude.

She said she saw me in the record stores,
And that I must be doing well.
I said the audience was heavenly,
But the traveling was hell.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to time.
Reliving in our eloquence,
Another 'auld lang syne'.....

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired,
And running out of things to say.
She gave a kiss to me as I got out,
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was back at school,
And felt that old familiar pain .....
And as I turned to make my way back home,
The snow turned into rain .....

Sorry to say that I don't know how the lyrics begin to the song. I am really trying to remember an actual lyric or line from the song but its just a blur right now. The only thing that I can remember is the sound of the singer's voice and the quiet and mellow vibe of the whole song.
If you can provide more info on the lyrics or anything else maybe I will be able to get a better idea if its the song that i'm thinking of. Thanks.

That was wrong anyway, I think Cat Stevens crept in.
Would help if you could hum it. The song above is the one I had in mind. If it's not that, I'm lost.
