SRV's Version Of 'Voodo Child'.

I do not know if this subject has been brought up before because it seems like it would be a topic that would be of interest to many people but anyways here I go,

Do you all feel that SRV's cover version of 'Vodoo Child(or Chile)' is just as incredible a piece of music and can easily stand up to the original version of the song by Hendrix?

I feel that its a very interesting topic to hear about because I have read that SRV's version really caused a storm of both negative and positive critcism from Hendrix purists.

SRV's Voodoo Child is brilliant IMO. Here it is live... at the El Mocambo:

I personally like SRV's version more than the original.

EDIT: The entire El Mocambo show is brilliant! He also does 3rd stone from the sun.

no, I don't think it's as good. It's a cool version but to me Voodoo Chile is all about fury and tripping out of your mind, and SRV couldn't wail on it that way.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's version is really kinda lame to me - he plays the right notes but ultimately it just sounds soulless

SRV was an unreal guitar player and in this clip he is absolutely SMOKING.....however I think the best version of voodoo child (slight return) is the original Electric Ladyland version. So SLOW, so GROOVY, so FUNKY. NOT just a reason for guitar heroics as the song has kinda become. Jimi meant every lyric he sang on it too, he WAS the voodoo child. cool

alright, to be fair the SRV Austin City Limits clip is pretty great

And I'm no Jimi fanatic, but the 2 versions on Electric Ladyland are both off the charts. Like nikk said, not an occasion for guitar wanking but because he truly became the music for those few minutes

that is SO missing in all of music today

When I listen to Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" I really BELIEVE he's a Voodoo Chile and not from this world. That whole song, from the wah-wah intro the the controlled fury at the end, is SPOOKY. That song is all about mood. I think that the guitar players who've covered this song miss that important aspect. SRV's playing on his version is great, but the original is about that (great playing) and much, much more.

And don't even talk about Kenny Wayne Sheperd's version...Nor the G3 (Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen)version.

this is one of those times when that one song became something different when ever those two played it. i'll bet if you had the chance to ask SRV he wouldn't even rate his version anywhere near Jimi's. thats what i loved so much about SRV, his humble spirit.

May they both RIP pray
