Ok I think I don't know the meaning of a guitar riff

When Doves Cry? whofarted
It begins with a guitar solo not a riff?!

Stairway To Heaven? whofarted
A riff needs to be repeated through out the song to be considered a riff, right?
[Edited 12/12/06 15:10pm]

Yeah, that's how I think of a riff also. So I agree about When Doves Cry... But Stairway To Heaven does repeat that guitar part, so I'd say it is a riff.

When it comes to R&B/Funk, you can't go wrong with Catfish's great work on JB's "Give it Up Turn it Loose".

A lot of the stuff Randi Roads(Rhoads) I don't know how to spell his name played for Ozzy when he first went solo before he died. I'm thinking right now of Crazy Train.

You know the opening two minutes aren;t original? It was stolen from spirit taurus. When it changed as well the chord is stolen from the chocolate watch band 'and she's lonely

A few that I hear ALL the time:

Layla - Derek and The Dominoes - Eric Clapton and Duane Allman

Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters
/ Bad to The Bone - George Thorogood and the Destroyers
I gotta go with this one. Seems like everyone knows this riff, but relatively few people can place it with this song. They just think of it as a "blues riff."

...and, of course at Every football game in the nation: lol

Rock and Roll (part 2) - Gary Glitter

Same with this one! They might not know the title, but everybody in the stadium just goes, "Bah-na-na-na-nah "Haaaaayyyyy!!!!! na-na-na-na-na-na"....

You mean Stairway, right (not When Doves Cry)? The chords are actually a device called a "passing minor." I'm sure it's been done a million times in classical & jazz & other places.

Still I guess that doesn't mean they didn't steal it from Spirit Taurus...

yes; taurus would be what it's from and you can dl the song and see for yourself

'and she's lonely' is the second part of stairway; jimmy page is a genius but a MAJOR thief too!
