The others are great, too,but probably only known by fans. Gett Off has a good one, too. Kiss' opening chord with the wah wah [Edited 12/11/06 21:23pm] My Legacy

No one has mentioned Keith Richards famous guitar riff opening on 'Brown Sugar',
its everybit as iconic as the riff to 'Satisfaction'. Also have to mention 'Day Tripper' by The Beatles. GREAT RIFF! [Edited 12/11/06 22:05pm]

I was just talking about this on another board actually. I do think "Smoke on the Water" HAS to be the most recognizable riff of all time though.

Iconic?
"Johnny B. Goode," Chuck Berry "The Thrill Is Gone," B.B. King (stands as iconic even in rock) "Purple Haze," Jimi Hendrix "Satisfaction," The Rolling Stones "Who's That Lady," The Isley Brothers (iconic even in rock, Isley's mean) "Reelin' In The Years," Steely Dan "London Calling," The Clash "Sunday Bloody Sunday," U2 "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana (the MOST iconic of the last 3 decades, for my $, and it's not my favorite) There are others that may not be the greatest, but are still iconic, for different reasons. *The opening riff to "Hello" (12" version) is iconic, if only to me* [Edited 12/12/06 8:21am] [Edited 12/12/06 8:22am] [Edited 12/12/06 8:24am] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I think thebanishedone (and namepeace afterwards) hit the definitive and most universal guitar riff...
...with the intro and body of Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. There are countless songs that use Berry's signature guitar comp from The Rolling Stones to The Beach Boys and beyond. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Ok I think I don't know the meaning of a guitar riff
When Doves Cry? It begins with a guitar solo not a riff?! Stairway To Heaven? A riff needs to be repeated through out the song to be considered a riff, right? [Edited 12/12/06 15:10pm]

When Doves Cry? It begins with a guitar solo not a riff?! Stairway To Heaven? Let's say distortion is not needed for it to be considered to be a riff, but a riff still needs to be repeated through out the song to be considered a riff, right? hey, you're picking on all my choices! I think a riff is a pretty loose term, meaning a few notes strung together. But that's just my take. When I think of a guitar riff, I admit I don't think of Stairway to Heaven, but it's one of the most played & best known guitar lines, so I included it. My Legacy

I'd say that the Jimi Hendrix Foxey Lady riff added the +9 chord to the Rock lexicon.

tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 definitely one of the coolest sounding chords. When I have to show it to someone I inevitably say "The Foxy Lady chord," and often that's enough. My Legacy

You are right about a riff being a loose term, but when I think of a riff I think of a few notes notes repeated that is the key element in song, played all the time usually after choruses. So I'm not sure about Staiway as the chords in the intro is repeated a couple of times during the verses. When Doves Cry no way has a guitar riff though, the keyboard part after the guitar solo sounds more of a riff to me

Without a doubt. It's used all the time in Jazz but it was fresh meat for Rockers. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
