nod Prince has a lot of memorable riffs... off the top of my head, I'd also add "Let's go crazy", "She's Always in My Hair" and "Endorphin Machine"

Yeah, I was thinking about Let's Go Crazy. The others are great, too,but probably only known by fans. Gett Off has a good one, too.

Kiss' opening chord with the wah wah nod

PurpleJam

No one has mentioned Keith Richards famous guitar riff opening on 'Brown Sugar',
its everybit as iconic as the riff to 'Satisfaction'.

Also have to mention 'Day Tripper' by The Beatles. GREAT RIFF!

Oh wow, how could I have forgotten to include 'Mean Street' by Van Halen!

Absolutely one of the BADDEST riffs ever done in rock music.

I was just talking about this on another board actually. I do think "Smoke on the Water" HAS to be the most recognizable riff of all time though. nod

I mean, even my mom knows it, and that's really saying something. lol

ditto.

Since everybody's mentioning their favourites riffs and not the most iconic ones I want to do my tribute to Deep Purple. My favourite band.

Some of their better riffs than Smoke

Black Night
Pictures Of Home
Fireball
Highway Star

And did I mention how much I love Coverdale era Deep Purple

BURN cool
STORMBRINGER cool

And Whitesnake deserves to be there with Still Of The Night headbang

Iconic?

"Johnny B. Goode," Chuck Berry

"The Thrill Is Gone," B.B. King (stands as iconic even in rock)

"Purple Haze," Jimi Hendrix

"Satisfaction," The Rolling Stones

"Who's That Lady," The Isley Brothers (iconic even in rock, Isley's mean)

"Reelin' In The Years," Steely Dan

"London Calling," The Clash

"Sunday Bloody Sunday," U2

"Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana (the MOST iconic of the last 3 decades, for my $, and it's not my favorite)

There are others that may not be the greatest, but are still iconic, for different reasons.

*The opening riff to "Hello" (12" version) is iconic, if only to me*

I think thebanishedone (and namepeace afterwards) hit the definitive and most universal guitar riff...

...with the intro and body of Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode.

There are countless songs that use Berry's signature guitar comp from The Rolling Stones to The Beach Boys and beyond.

Ok I think I don't know the meaning of a guitar riff

When Doves Cry? whofarted
It begins with a guitar solo not a riff?!

Stairway To Heaven? whofarted
A riff needs to be repeated through out the song to be considered a riff, right?

Let's say distortion is not needed for it to be considered to be a riff, but a riff still needs to be repeated through out the song to be considered a riff, right?

hey, you're picking on all my choices!

I think a riff is a pretty loose term, meaning a few notes strung together. But that's just my take.

When I think of a guitar riff, I admit I don't think of Stairway to Heaven, but it's one of the most played & best known guitar lines, so I included it.

I'd say that the Jimi Hendrix Foxey Lady riff added the +9 chord to the Rock lexicon.

definitely one of the coolest sounding chords. When I have to show it to someone I inevitably say "The Foxy Lady chord," and often that's enough.

lol yes! and it was you who said Smells Like Teen Spirit lol It IS very popular nod still the song annoys me.

You are right about a riff being a loose term, but when I think of a riff I think of a few notes notes repeated that is the key element in song, played all the time usually after choruses. So I'm not sure about Staiway as the chords in the intro is repeated a couple of times during the verses.

When Doves Cry no way has a guitar riff though, the keyboard part after the guitar solo sounds more of a riff to me

Without a doubt.

It's used all the time in Jazz but it was fresh meat for Rockers. smile
