Confessions Of A Pop Group by The Style Council.
Born in 1958 Paul Weller was leader of British New Wave band The Jam before splitting the group at the height of their success In 1983 he formed The Style Council and released some of his most experimental recordings taking in such diverse musical styles as jazz, funk, rock, classical, rap, pop and French accordion music (true!) He also married Dee C Lee, his backing singer In 1988 he released what is still considered to be the most experimental album(and probably one of the best IMO) of his 30 year career, Confessions Of A Pop Group. It opens with It's A Very Deep Sea, a piano ballad and forgotten classic. Then moves on to The Story Of Someone's Shoe featuring MOR backing vocals by The Swingle Singers on a graphic song about one night stands and the woman walking away with the man's sperm still trickling down her leg. Then follows a duet between Paul & Dee which features piano and sweeping strings, another lost classic. After a couple of quiet piano solos, side one ends with The Gardener Of Eden featuring a classical style opening part with harps and oboe. Side 2 is a more standard pop affair with tracks such as Why I went Missing & How She Threw It All Away in which Weller hardly disguises his Beatles influences plus Life At A Top Peoples Health Farm, the Thatcher baiting single. Iwasadoledadstoyboy is electro funk whilst Confessions 1, 2 & 3 is a jazzy track. All this leads to the final track "Confessions Of A Pop Group", the tour de force of the album. Apparently inspired by Osiris's War On The Bullshit, this 10 minute diatribe about the state of "Thatcher's Britain" is the funkiest track Weller ever recorded and the album is worth buying for this track alone. This was the last album released by The Style Council. They recorded one more album in 1989 but it was rejected by their record label who decided that an album of Detroit house influenced tracks by a bunch of white Brits was commercial suicide. They split soon after, Weller continues to have a successful solo career to this day. | |
