I was like this the whole time I imagined this would be no better than a Sesame street soundtrack and I was absolutely blown away. First of all, she has a great voice. I had no idea she could even sing and considering how damn annoying she was on that show I can't say that I ever cared to find out. The production is just right. It's not over the top and has such strong organic elements and she harmonizes really well. There is some very strong songwriting going on here, some of the strongest in Lenny's whole catalogue This album is so overlooked and it's a shame because I still listen to this and I get surprised in very good ways at how great many of these songs are. I have even bought this at full price two times to make sure I keep it in my collection. I can't praise this album enough Yay! Because of this now I'm listening to this wonderful work SOLD!! Now I'm gonna be on the look out for this album I hope it's not hard to track down @ your signature! 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

thekidsgirl said: FuNkeNsteiN said: Ok, I guess with this one the picture can kinda speak for itself Didn't have time to write anythin' so.... Anyway, this is the best album the Bros Johnson put out. It's full of funky grooves. To me, this is the Brothers Johnson at their peak. Louis' playing is superb and George is doin' his thang on vox and gee-tarrrr. There are no fillers on the album (well, except the short intro-ish part to side two of the album, Rocket Countdown/Blastoff, but that's not really a song so...). Contains such gems as Blam!!, Ain't We Funkin', Ride-O-Rocket and Mista' Cool. This album might be hard to find on cd but you can get it on vinyl at GEMM.Com. Definitely worth owning. [Edited 12/11/06 22:52pm] It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

I think we were talking about Van Hunt's "Mean Sleep" duet with Nikka Costa and the original by Cree came up and I hadn't heard it and asked how the album was and you said it I should definitely pick it up. But I agree, that album is hot!

Can is one of the most publically unknown, but artistically influential bands of modern times. This album was created in 1973 and still is more progressive than most things that are being released today. It's truly timeless.

TommyRoss said: Air - Moon Safari The French group Air is always grouped in with the electronic artists, which seems a bit unfair and limiting. They make great pop music that is heavily influenced by instrumental pop music and melodies of the 1960s. If you've seen and enjoyed any of Sofia Coppola's films, you've heard Air. They did the soundtrack for Virgin Suicides and provided songs for her two subsequent films. Their music is breezy, moody, atmospheric, a bit trippy and sometimes laced with a sly sense of humor (Sexy Boy is as fun as it is funny). For me, nobody on today's music scene uses synths the way they do. They're sometimes compared to Burt Bacharach and John Barry; both of those seem like appropriate comparisons but not wholly descriptive. Most of their tracks are instrumental, and they save the vocals for their more introverted, meloncholic songs. All I Need and You Make It Easy employ a female vocalist but vocals for the rest of the tracks are mostly ambient. I can't say that it's an easy sell of an album, but I think it's beautiful. Good one and good sell. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I've already harped on this being my 'album of the year' but as for why... Mostly, it's just a collection of great songs. Songs, it appears, that no one has heard. And songs might be putting it too loosely: more often than not, the song's finish sounds nothing like the song's beginning. It's a rollercoaster ride. Its a pretty organic sounding rock album. But sensitive. Despite the musical excursions sending you all over the map, the album is consistent, cohesive. They can be trippy without being plastic. You know, I've held 2 jobs in my life that required pitching; I failed miserably at them. I reckon it just comes down to this being the only album I bought this year that I couldn't let get too far from me, the only disc that I couldn't file away, the one I'm still listening to a year on. bc "I got the devil in me, girl." - 'John the Baptist', Afghan Whigs

I had so many musical influences growing up. My mother was into stuff like the Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Credence Clearwater. My father was into stuff like Earth Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan, Elton John. My aunt was into stuff like The Carpenters, Helen Ready, John Denver plus I was a kid in the 70s so I loved disco and what is now considered "old school" and then there were the "oldies from when my mother was young that the gang members I grew up around always listened to. Then there was the hard rock and metal that my cousin and neighbor used to listen to. I got a little of everything growing up.
But I steered clear of rock music for a few reasons. Growing up in the church, you know they really don't take to kindly to rock Plus my neighbor and my cousin and his friends that were into that music, well they were total drugheads so I always associated rock music with "sin" because of the church and that was just exacerbated by the fact that the people I knew who were into rock were also into drugs so that music quite frankly scared me growing up. So I entered my adult life without a connection to Rock music and so I wanted to recommend THE ALBUM that broke down that barrier for me: I had heard so many great things about the Smashing Pumpkins so when I was browsing the used section at the Warehouse, I saw it on sale for $5.99 and decided that wasn't a huge sacrifice if I didn't like it so I decided to check it out. I was living alone at the time and I got stoned right before listening to it and I was astounded at what I heard. I even cried at how beautiful it was. This album opened up a whole new world of music to me.....the world of alternative rock and that door opened up other doors and my new found joy led me to other artists such as Tricky, Bjork and PJ Harvey all of which are amazing artists. The album opens up subltely and then takes off.....!!!! The guitar 3 minutes 10 seconds in evokes so many different feelings, joy, freedom, elation....a sense of flying. Lyrically this album is amazing. Vulnerable and guarded, Billy Corgan explores the deepness of his pain and sadness with such amazing integrity. However Billy can be difficult to understand at times so I would recommend that you google the lyrics and keep them handy for when you listen because understanding the words is really key to how amazing these songs are. For me, it's very exciting to be able to pinpoint the one album that changed the course of my musical life for the better. Before it I had been closed off to a world which I wouldn't even consider. After that door opened, I broadened my musical horizons and my life is so much richer because of that 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

After that door opened, I broadened my musical horizons and my life is so much richer because of that Wow. I don't remember exactly what was the first big rock album I bought. I think I sort of eased into it. Maybe Living Colour's 'Vivid'. I was looking for some funk mixed with hard rock and after buying Mazarati, da'Krash and Dan Reed Network, I wanted something that pushed the envelope a little more.
