Although I prefer Stevie Wonder I believe that Ray had a larger impact on the development on Soul music. Your topic doesnt ask for a personal preference, so let me be blunt. Music historians say that it was the Rythm and Blues of Ray's early Atlantic recordings which gave birth to what we call Soul today. I agree to the extend that just like Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers Ray managed it to take the Gospel out of church in the early 50s, even before James Brown came on the scene in 1956. That step was so radical, so daring, so revolutional at its time... that it set the whole groove for 30 years and more coming.
I believe that Stevie did not influence musicians more than the other great artsÃsts of his time, such as the already mentioned JB, Marvin Gaye, etc. However, Stevie managed it to progress, to take Soul music to anew level. And he did that well "Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany" | |
