Yeah. He overdid it more than anyone else I've ever heard use it. To the point that most of those songs are interchangeable.

can you think of the Voice Box without thinking of Him?? thoughts:

No, because of what I said above.

I really love Roger Troutman and Zapp, but I get bored with their music real fast.Like SuperNova pointed out, most of their songs are interchangeable. They were funky though. My favorites are "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Roger (1981) and "Computer Love"(1985).

I think Roger did more for the talk box than any other artist in history. Frampton noodled with it, as did Bon Jovi, but Roger made it make sense. Groups post-Zapp like Jodeci dabbled and only copied Roger. Indeed Roger made his mark. Anyone who has seen Roger live knows that their show was off the hook and anyone yapping about his songs being "interchangeable" are probably only listening to the few "hits" that they know. He had a lot of songs - and they weren't interchangeable. Its called picking a style and staying with it...and there's nothing wrong with that. I've seen Roger play more instruments on stage than I did Prince and he played everything well. Roger was a funk/jazz/bluesman. He wasn't trying to change the world - just entertain. He wrote a few socially concious comments through his music, but overall he was about droppin' the funk jazz and blues on us via the voice box. Yeah, some of you all didn't like it, ut it was his gimmick. He was good without the voice box. "Be Alright" was testimony to that. Zapp STILL in my opinion had the best live show on a small stage of any other band I can think of. Not even Prince could touch Roger's small stage act. It was VERY well organized. Big ups to the fellas and long live Roger.

I TOTALLY agree with BlaqueKnight;

Roger elevated the use of the vocoder "talk box", he took funk to another level. He was a VERY talented multi-instrumentalist, & a real showman to boot.

I'll never forget the summer of '88; I saw Roger & Zapp THREE times that summer- at a "Budweiser Fest" at the Washington Monument, then like 1 week later at Carter Baron & then in August of that summer at Kings Dominion. It was basically the same show each time, but it was THOROUGHLY entertaining, a funky, foot-stomping good time.

Roger BROUGHT the funk.

His talk box, the way he used it, it had a hypnotic quality to it.

In the last few years, Teddy Riley (mainly with Guy) has done some talk box work..
I think on that last Guy "reunion" album there was a song, "Teddy's Jam (3?)" which was basically a re-make of Roger's "Dance Floor"..
Teddy's good enough on the talk box, but he can't work it like Roger..

Also, there's the French group Daft Punk, they've done several house- & techno-type songs with the talk box: "One More Time" which was HUGE in France when I lived there, but I like more "Bigger Taller Faster Stronger" (or whatver that combination of adjectives was)..

others can do the talk box, but for me, no 1 will ever come close to the way Roger did it..

so ruff, & so tuff..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

What up Blaqueknight...

I can truly attest to the greatness of Roger on stage. Me and some of the fellas went to "FOR SISTERS ONLY"(me and the fellas was there FOR THE OBVIOUS REASONS smile ) convention here in Atlanta a few years ago and Roger was one of the musical peformers there. Let me tell you when Roger and the crew hit the stage...man it seems like the temperature in the building went up several notches. In other words Roger turned the whole Atlanta World Congress Center SLAM OUT. Allow me to rephrase that...he turned the Atlanta World Congress Center INSIDE OUT. Man me and some of the fellas with me grab us a lady and we out in the open floor and start grooving...WITH fierceness.

If you're going to do e-funk (electronic FUNK), this is HOW to do it. Roger's stuff is electronic but it is stil hard and FUNKY. I remember the day I saw this Roger concert(Sept 7th,1996...the evening 2PAC got shot).

After witnessing that ultra funk throwdown, I regretted all the times I missed Zapp in concert. Well at least I got a chance to witness Roger in all of his funky glory before he departed from us.
