Aretha Franklin - the columbia years

I`ve never really gotten into the music Aretha Franklin made during her Columbia years, but today i saw this clip of her singing
a song called "One step ahead"

http://www.youtube.com/wa...PjJ49xjGTw

WOW!! worship

Too bad it`s not included on "Queen in waiting", i`ll have to get the 3 disc compilation, "The great Aretha Franklin"

I'm sure there's some good stuff there but she was pretty much floundering around at Columbia.
They were trying to make her something she wasn't and had no clue what her strength was.

John Hammond had a great sense of discovering talent,,,he just didn't know what to provide them with. Esp the black acts, he made them do these safe pop songs just to appeal for the white audience.

The same mistake he did on Billie Holiday, was done on Aretha,,,and thats why I guess folks don't care too much for the columbia period.

But I love that period of her life simply becoz you can hear her innocence in the music, her Dinah Washington tribute album is the perfect CREAM on the coffee.

Good luck, you got a helluva tuff task there.

One should NEVER collect Aretha's music without tracking her debut album which is a live gospel album recorded in 1956(while she was nothing but a 15/14 child) its from Chess records I think.

I couldn't believe how MATURE young ReRe sounded,,,its like she lived a pain of a lifetime.

There`s a cheap cd called "Aretha`s gospel", i wonder if it`s the same songs that appear on the album you mentioned...

1. There Is A Fountain Filled With Blood
2. Precious Lord (Take My Hand) (part 1)
3. Precious Lord (Take My Hand) (part 2)
4. You Grow Closer
5. Never Grow Old
6. Day Is Past And Gone
7. He Will Wash You As White As Snow
8. While The Blood Runs Warm
9. Yield Not To Temptation
