Hard 2 say, since he has so many albums... But I'd say "Blow By Blow" is essential, as is "Wired"...

We know that Beck digs Prince, and as one of the most original sounding guitarists, and as expressive as Jeff Beck is, that's just fantastic...

OH.

U didn't really mean "Beck", did U?
"He's a musician's musician..."

Anx

his most prince like is "midnite vultures".

my favorites are "sea change" (very different from his others, very lush and pretty and a bit sad), "odelay" and the most recent one, "the information".

i'd only suggest veering clear of "mellow gold" and "mutations", not because they aren't good, but because i think they're harder to get into than his other stuff. "guero" is okay, but i don't think it's as fully realized as the stuff i recommended above.

that's just my opinion, though. shrug

My fave is propably Mellow Gold. Hard to get into? I don't think so. Should more or less grab you right away, IMO.

My favs are Midnight Vultures and Guero, though it might be slightly influenced by the fact that I managed at last to see him live in concert with the Guero tour worship. And yes I know that other tours may have been even better sigh.
With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Skip his 1992 and 1993 efforts One Foot In The Grave and Stereopathetic Soul Manure. Start with Mellow Gold, his 1994 breakthrough. It has the song Loser on it, and was when I first started listening. Then get his other albums in the order they were realeased, Odelay, Mutations, Midnight Vultures, Sea Change, Guero, Information. Here's what to expect:

One Foot In The Grave: Acoustic Folkie stuff
Stereopathetic Soul Manure: Collages of noises, blips, and sound effects
Mellow Gold: Eclectic folk/hip hop influenced kind-of-stoner rock
Odelay: Dust Brothers produced hip hop influenced pop/rock
Mutations: Ballady-acousticy-folky-bluesish stuff
Midnight Vultures: Prince influenced funk-pop-rock
Sea Change: Serge Gainsbourg-esque lush string laden pop ballads
Guero: Electro-influenced pop type stuff
The Information: a bit of everything above blended up together.

You should definately get the ones in bold. They're the ones that best represent the evoltuion of his music, and are solid albums.

Guero & the Guero remixes are great.
The Information has some really great music too.
Sea Change is too Gordon Lightfoot. Skip it.
Midnite Vultures has a lot of blah filler &
Beck himself says he doesn't like that cd.
Odelay is good but it gets a bit Beastie at times.

I started with Midnite Vultures, cause of all the story's about how it was influenced by Prince. So it was very easy for me to get into Beck, after that I bought the rest, Odelay is also very good and Sea Change is totally different! Almost like if it was from another artist, very personal.
Guero was a let down for me and I don't like The Information yet, but that doens't say anything with Beck.
