What R&B females? There's no such thing as R&B anymore. Nowadays, it's shit hop with singing over it instead of rapping. Andy is a four letter word.

I completely disagree. Just by calling another woman a bitch or a ho, they are asserting their OWN power and expressing themselves. Those are acceptable terms in popular music by today's standards. I hate when people try to make music (especially urban music) PC. It is what it is. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

I buy this just about as much as I buy feminism is about wearing thongs and "exploring your sexsooahlity on your own terms". In songs like Soldier these women are actually putting themselves down. They are disempowering themselves. [Edited 12/6/06 14:04pm]

Does Fantasia say she wants a man with no dreams or or you assuming that's what hood boy means? I live in the hood but I'm an executive so what's your point on that one?

how is referring to myself as less than I am empowering? How does Fantasias lyric: " I Need a Hood Boy, a boy with no ambition and no dreams " empower her, or anyone else, for that matter?

I liked the image that TLC put forth with "Silly Ho", which is basically the opposite of Soldier: I ain't never been no Silly Ho Waiting for your call Like the other girls all do I ain't never been no one to mess With someone else's mess That's not a thing for me to do I ain't never been that chickenhead To wake up in your bed After every club or two Ain't gonna be the one in mini skirt Always wanna flirt With every player on the team Chorus: If you really wanna find Some one to get some behind I ain't the one for you And if you really wanna know Boy you need a silly ho To do whatever you wanna do If you really wanna find Someone to get some behind I ain't the one for you (I ain't the one for you) And if you really wanna know Boy you need a silly ho To do whatever you wanna do Oooh oooh

Stymie, she says she wants a dude in the trap, that is ATL slang, for a dude who is in the streets with no future and SOldier drops Drug references, from carrying big thangs, to flipping money tthree ways, i hope your old enough to not just look at lyrics and see the behind meanings

But to generalize women in R&B with these two examples is really far-reaching.

Change "singing" to "wailing" and you're on the money.

Same thing with selling sex--if they have the body and the allure to make some dough, and they are comfortable showing skin, it's money in the bank for them, that's empowering too. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Change "singing" to "wailing" and you're on the money. Wailing and poor lyrical content are the main reasons why R&B or shit hop has never interested me with a few rare exceptions. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

[Edited 12/6/06 14:04pm] Oh please...it's not dissimilar to a black person using the "N" word or a gay person using the "F" word amongst themselves...it's still not OK for a non black person to use the word "N" or a straight person to use the word "F"...if people take words that were meant to degrade them and turn it into a part of their own vernacular, I don't see anything wrong with that. Sorry, this I just CANNOT agree with. Equality connotes RESPECT. If the men don't respect them, they counter it by not respecting themselves? Yeah, that's some equality Same thing with selling sex--if they have the body and the allure to make some dough, and they are comfortable showing skin, it's money in the bank for them, that's empowering too.
I don't quite see how that relates to the topic... There is no disrespect in being sexy. [Edited 12/6/06 14:27pm]

[Edited 12/6/06 14:27pm] the second part was a response to your comment about thongs/feminism. this first part, I am saying that when a group is repressed by certain words/language, once that group starts using those words/that language the meaning evolves and therefore isn't as powerful in being used to degrade. I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

badujunkie said: the second part was a response to your comment about thongs/feminism. That comment had nothing to do with looking or acting sexy. It had everything to do with how feminism has been warped from its original purpose to the freedom to wear thongs and fuck a lot. I don't agree that that's the point of femenism, just like I didn't agree with the comment (yours) I was responding to. this first part, I am saying that when a group is repressed by certain words/language, once that group starts using those words/that language the meaning evolves and therefore isn't as powerful in being used to degrade.
Nope. Can't say I agree with that assessment. [Edited 12/6/06 14:39pm]

Is that what the lyrics to both Fantasia and Destiny's Child songs are saying? Really? Hard to believe coming from them. Monica is a whole different matter.Fantasia - I Need a Hood Boy, a boy with no ambition and no dreams Destiny Child - I Need a SOldier, if you aint selling drugs you can't holla at B Monica - Sideline Ho, and there is many more and more of these songs, that rnb females are making that is way more powerful than any credit card being slide down some beautiful strippers ass
