Well maybe for you, sweetheart. But I'm here to tell you, as a woman, I was raised to interpret bitch and ho as fighting words and any woman who has the balls to call me one to my face where I'm close enough to 'em may find that I'm gone Reach Out And Touch something and it won't be her HAND. I can see what you are saying but I don't understand why women don't see themselves adding to how they are already being seen as deserving less than equal out of life. less than. doesn't mean you think that of yourself, but the world does it and that dominates in many ways. yes women should be allowed to say whatever and it not be taken personal as far as entertainment. you, know I CAN agree with how you can see it that way after all. but it is a bad thing at the same time if it is done by women outside of the entertainment because how could any woman wanting to show how strong they are by beating down another. I see that often and many don't see anything powerful comming from it. But entertainment shouldn't be absorbed so harshly by the world [Edited 12/7/06 6:06am] nipsy

But to generalize women in R&B with these two examples is really far-reaching. If hip-hop has driven R&B for the better part of 20 years, and hip-hop has turned to glamorizing crime and ignorance, why wouldn't we think it's affected the women?
Many have thugs in their videos. Many celebrate the thugs in their lyrics. That's what sells. The women share blame as much as the men for the sorry state of R&B. [Edited 12/7/06 9:26am] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

And what about a female artist (of any genre) that calls herself a bytch? One of the first non Hip-hop songs that I remember using the word "Bitch" was that song by Meredith (don't remember her last name), "I'm a Bitch", and that song wasn't even an R&B song, nor did I find it demeaning in anyway. TLC has used the word many times in their songs, and when I listen to those lyrics; I hear "bitch" defined as a strong, independent woman who can do just fine without a man's help. Now, words like "ho", "whore", and "slut" mean what they mean, but IMO "bitch" has come to have more than just one definition in recent years. Just like someone posted previously about how gay people call each other "f---" and black people have referred to each other as "N----", maybe these terms are acceptable in their inner circle of friends. In my inner circle of female friends, we have "bitch-a-ques", and "bitches-night-out"...man, they're soo fun . Personally, I like our expressions better than "girl's night out" or referring to them as my "chicks", two terms that I find just as belittling as "bitch". When I think "girl", I think young and naive; and the term "chick" just pisses me off because it's dumb. For me, the word "Bitch" means, that not only can I make my own money to support myself, but if you get in my way, I'll punch you in the face, step over you, and keep movin'. Since everyone has their own opinion of the word, I thought I'd just offer mine....just remember different strokes for different folks. Prince Rogers Nelson

Some, and I'll put the bald highlight on this; some female entertainrs used the term "bitch" as a sign of empowerment long b4 hip-hop and Raggedy & Bluse. Not that I condon it, I'm just saying it went waaaay b4 all this Hip-Hop blame.
Billie Holiday, always refered to herself as the "bitch on wheels". Mae West, who refers to herself as thee "snappy bitch". Bessie Smith refers to herslef as a "bitch" too. Once again, I don't condon it,,,but it is OLD

Once again, I don't condon it,,,but it is OLD I don't care about the usage of a term so much as the imagery and themes in the music. The use of the term by women, just as blacks, hispanics, italians, etc. use their own epithets, is understood. But it's the ignorance bleeding over into the women's music that I think the author of the thread is more concerned about. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
