Jennifer Holliday is entirely too old to have done Dreamgirls, the movie. Her Broadway zenith in that role was 24 friggin' years ago! How you gonna have someone who is almost certainly in her mid to late 40s play that part? At this point, she would have had to play somebody's mama -- and I don't think even SHE would have wanted that. And that ain't being mean -- it's just the facts of life for any actor. (Been there, done that.)

Frankly, I give Jennifer Hudson all the credit in the world for taking on a part that was originated that strongly and beautifully -- and making it her own (which, by all accounts, she has). That's a very intimidating thing for an actor. Good on her.

well both Jennifer and Sheryl have went on record stating that they weren't offered cameo's in the film... i don't think playing one of the girls mothers was out of the question for either

Loretta Divine has a small part in the movie. It'll be kinda fun to see her in it. I've seen bootleg recordings of the original show, and her voice is amazing. Though I love Jennifer Holliday she's never asked to do these things anymore, because she's a neurotic mess and was always more than a handful. I think it's a case of life imitating art imitating life, and I'm sure her behavior was exaggerated and the behavior of the producers, etc was minimized. Too bad she didn't get her start now, because this business seems to thrive on bad behavior alone.

I love that Tonys performance, Harle! I've watched it many, many time and even through that grainy recording, I still get goosebumps. That voice...

I'm sure there's a reason for that -- and we'll probably never know the whole story.

It'd be hard enough for the "new girls" to do their work without the added stress of having folks who want to "consult" or otherwise kibitz hanging around. There's nothing worse than being watched constantly by someone who still thinks that part belongs to her. And it may just be that that's the exact situation the producers were trying to avoid.

so i guess this is true about Jenneifer
In todays NY POST Liz Smith is reporting the following

Life is imitating art now. Jennifer Holiday who was so incredible onstage in Dreamgirls as the original Effie, has incurred the wrath of Paramount for being uncooperative and not helpful in publicizing the movie. Word came down to omit any photo of her from the publicity for the movie version..... Effie being pushed aside again and privatley singing And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going.

I agree that none of them should have reprised their roles in the film, but these are the women who made this play so exciting and inspiring that ppl have been tripping over themselves to put it on film. They should have been approached for some kind of acting role, period. And not some BS one-liner extra roles either.

Why? They had their time in those roles (a damn good time), but it's over.

By that reasoning, everyone who ever originated a role on Broadway should get to be in the film (in some capacity). That ain't how it works. Just because Jennifer Holliday kicked ass as Effie onstage doesn't mean she would have been right for the film -- or that she would be right to play Effie's mom...or her dresser...or the washroom attendant...or any other part.

Can you imagine if the producers of My Fair Lady had said to Julie Andrews (who originated the role of Eliza Doolittle on Broadway to raves -- only to be passed over for Audrey Hepburn in the film version), "We think you're great, honey -- just great. But we just can't let you play Eliza. How would you feel about playing the housekeeper?"

I agree. Additionally, I think it would be a distraction. It would take me right out of the movie should one of them suddenly appear on screen, because it would seem like it was done purely out of obligation.

I don't think Sheryl Lee or even wild one Jennifer want a STARRING role. They want to be acknowledged withen the context of the movie(ala cameo like Ms.Divine) as she says, "Give me the chance to earn my bread". Though knowing their demanding nature, as opposed to lil' ol' modest Loretta, they wouldn't have settled without a VERY fancy and neon-esque production and that would be a distraction from "the girls" which is what Bill and his producers are REALLY avoiding.

Still, it would've put a more intersting twist seeing Sheryl Lee(which I love) and Miss Holliday. This doesn't change a goddamn thing though, I am still gonna watching this sucka:nod:

Jennifer Holliday has lost so much weight. I saw her singing a remix of "I am Not Telling you" and it was no way has good has the original, it's also seem like with all the weight she lost, she also lost some of the soul, passion and power in her voice.

Don't know if anyone knew this (or even cares) but Eddie Murphy showed up at the premiere of "Dreamgirls" with Tracey Edmonds (Babyface's ex). Supposedly they've been dating for a month. He also blasted (in a interview) and impregnated Scary Spice and left her for Tracey Edmonds.

Miss Holiday is seriously one of the most frighteningly ruthless voices in American music history worship It is amazing that a human being could actually have that ability to use the breath in their body in that way clapping

I didn't even know Tracey and Babyface were divorced. Scary Spice is really pregnant now? Wow.

I saw Jennifer Holliday on Extra or one of those shows saying Jennifer Hudson's version for "And I'm Telling You...." is basically a carbon copy of hers. Holliday really identifies with the song and now it must feel like a whole new generation will embrace it as someone else's. From the sound of things, this movie might become a classic like "Sparkle" or "5 Heartbeats" Too bad they couldn't have given Holliday a cameo or something.

Still, life moves on. From what I've heard, JHud and cast did their thang and deserves a chance to shine.

I agree after seeing the movie and hearing Jennifer Hudson's version ( she did do her own thing vocally) and I'm not feeling so bad for Jennifer Holiday after hearing about the swipes she's been taking at the movie... one would think that she would be happy a new generation will get to experience something that she was a big part off

I beg to differ, I listened to the damn thing. She has a damn good voice but no personality, she didn't make the song her own, its a clone version of Jennifer's song.
