It's definately not his best album but I did admire him at the time for being one of the very few artists still making uptempo funk instead of selling out to midtempo shit hop, the shit hop look, speech, and lifestyle, and weak adult contemporary ballads. He held on for a looooong time before he finally sold out with "Invicible". I didn't even buy that album because I won't have one cent of my money supporting bullshit.

[Edited 12/6/06 12:31pm]

Invicible biggest drawback were the fact that the album was too damn long....because of too many weak slow songs!

VA, be happy you didn't waste your $10.00 like I did at the record store.

Most certainly is.

Isn't it possible, just possible, that HIStory simply...isn't that good? I just don't think it's that good, lyrically or musically.

It's paranoid sounding, insecure, freakin' anti-semetic at one point, and desperate. Shaq rapping? Good Christ.

I know what group you are in razz

I think the title of HIStory should be "Justified Victim." After the bullshit Michael was put through in 93, it is only fair he had the right to bitch about it ALL he wanted. And often people knock HIStory for being "too personal" and "too insecure" like you pointed out, but those same people, then bitch when Michael sings about love and "everyday things" like he did on Invincible. When Michael makes pop (You Rock My World) people want personal, when Michael makes personal, people want pop. Gosh. People are so damn greedy when it comes to having things a certain way. If you don't like HIStory fine, then sell it to me. It is my favorite CD OF ALL TIME and I would gladly take it off your hands. (If nothing else, it would make a great coaster for when guests are over.)

What I find funny about HIStory was that Evan, the father of Michael's 1993 "victim" (cough BULLSHIT cough), there are documents that show he had EVERY intention of releasing an album called EVANstory. (Which would be an album responding and telling his side of the story.) What a joke. When people say this guy is some hero for standing up to Michael, it makes LAUGH OUT LOUD. lol lol

In short..I LOVE HIStory. And if you don't like it, fine, but it doesn't mean IT SUCKS. Sorry. cool

Why do you have to bring up the child molestation charges? Ugh, I don't wanna go into all of that. No, I don't believe he's 100% innocent, but I don't care to discuss that in this thread. That's been done to death already.

I don't mind that HIStory is a personal album. Not at all. I enjoy MJ's lighthearted pop, I love his life-affirming positive ballads, but I also like seeing a more personal side. What I don't like is a collection of paranoid, self-pitying songs with a lack of melodies and a bunch of screeching and angry ranting.

I've wondered what the ORIGINAL version of Little Susie sounds like. It was first recorded in 1989 so it could have a different vibe than the released version.

And he should have kept "Why" instead of giving it to his newphews!

YESSS!!!!! "Why" is one of the songs Michael ditched for an album to give to someone else and it made me wonder, "Why?" (No pun intended.) Maybe it was to be a good uncle, and help 3T out since at the time, they were a new act on the his label, but still...it would have been so much better if he would have had it on HIStory as a solo song. smile

IMO the same thing goes for "What More Can I Give." It was orignally suppose to be included on Invincible, but wasn't. (Or so it was reported by Roger Friedman.)
That song would have been so much better as a solo song, then like half the weak slow songs that made the final album. Even though "You Are My Life" is my jam. smile

"Stranger In Moscow" is arguably one of MJ's best self-penned songs...It's easily his most mature song lyrically...Simply a great track....

The rest of the album suffers from stale production...And most of the actual songwriting sounds like he was a little too consumed with giving his detractors the middle finger and forgot to write a melody...Came off like an overbloated effort overall..

Even though I prefer Dangerous and do not listen to History as a whole that often, there are some fantastic songs.
Stranger in Moscow - I think one critic has put it right when he said "if it is possible to hear lonelyness, this is how it sounds"
Earth song - breathtaking music
D.S - hot rock stuff
Litle Susie - so touching
Smile - amazing

Even though it was a bit hit I don´t like YOu are not alone. It´s just too much R. Kelly. It´s plain for me.

Great album! I love the angry 'everybody's trying to get me but I'll show them' Michael just as much as I like 'soulful Off The Wall' Michael. Great uptempo tracks, but I can't stand You Are Not Alone and Childhood anymore.

I remember critics thought the album was half good/great,half filler.
I listened 2 this album a lot! but I always had the feeling it was more a collection of songs instead of an album, compared 2 Thriller of Dangerous(his best imo).

But it has some of his best songs ever on it,songs I listened more 2 than
songs from the albums I mentioned!
The obvious Stranger in..,They don't care,Scream(a forgotten hit and a song NOT so loved by pop-crowd).

But I also love Money and the fillers WITH a great groove/beat
Tabloid Junkie,HIStory,2BAD.
Almost never listened 2 DS and This time around, don't like them, same 4 LS and Smile.
Thanx PurpleKnight,I'm listening 2 the album right now,4 the first time since years... how great music used 2 be lol

The only songs I like on it are Strangers In Moscow (absolutely brilliant), Earth Song (rousing stuff), You Are Not Alone (to a lesser degree), and Tabloid Junkie to an even lesser degree.

I agree, the album's too focused on telling his detractors to fuck off than with writing memorable songs.

nod To me though, this seemed to fit at the time that it came out, except for D.S. However, when I listen to it after all the BS that has gone on since then, it just annoys the crap out of me.

Dang right it was cool! smile

And I'm probably one of the few Jewish fans who defended/and understood Michael for saying, "kike me." When he explained it on Prime Time Live as being, the song casting himself as the victim, it made sense to me, and this was at me being 10 years old.

Michael..I got your back. biggrin

I gotta agree with u there...
personally alot of the tracks couldve been replaced for the tracks in blood on the dance floor i think it would of been more complete
get rid of D.S. Childhood, HIStory, Come Together (even though i like his version), and totaly destroy the master to little susie

Add in Morphine, Ghost , Is it Scary, Blood on the dancefloor, and superfly sister
, you'd have a MUCH MUCH BETTER album....

The 5 tracks from BOTDF are pretty good. Is It Scary is from 1993/94, The title track and Superfly Sister are from 1990(originally recorded for Dangerous) and Morphine is from the HIStory sessions

Little Susie is fucking gorgeous. Beautiful melody, truly haunting - a complete masterpiece.

Blood On The Dancefloor IS an essential purchase. Those five new songs are amongst his all-time best.

Especially Morphine. That's his most honestly graphic song to date. Powerful stuff.

Yeah that is so true, and while the remixes aren't THAT bad, the remixes I really dig are: "Scream" "2 Bad" and "HIStory."

And the cover FUCKIN ROCKS! I have a huge poster of that cover in my bedroom, in a black frame. It looks FUCKIN AWESOME. Love it. Love the cover. Love the new songs. smile
