Current Artists and their predecessors!

Name some of your favorite artists and add who they are influenced by or remind you of. I'll get us started...

Beyonce = Diana Ross and Tina Turner
Gwen Stefani = Dale Bozzio (from Missing Persons)
Kelis = Grace Jones (only not even half as fierce but she still rocks)

That`s true!! We LOVE Grace Jones love

I can definitely see the connection between Beyonce and Ross.

Interesting thread btw, any suggestions for Alicia Keys?

Yeah, Common has introspective, provocative, and positive messages in his rhymes. His style reminds me of Gil's, one of the modern forefathers of rap.

i think for A. Keys it would be Stevie Wonder. though i think most people would agree that he's on a different level from her musically.

I actually don't like Common. He seems too preachy for me though I can appreciate him doing soemthing different. At least he's not talking about hoes and money.

I used to feel like that. Could never stomach a whole album of his until Be. omg Maybe Be was a bit watered down. Anyway now I can enjoy his other albums.

Stuff like "Soul By The Pound" is awesome! But I discovered that way late. When I first heard about him only maybe 10 years ago I thought he was way too straight/serious.
