What is the best album of all-time? Recently (as in, half an hour ago) the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commision) released the top 100 albums as voted on by the Australian public, and there was also a TV show in which a panel of music critis/fans, radio hosts, music producers, musicians and comedians discussed the top 10. Most were unhappy with #1 and #3, the loved #3, thought #5 should've been higher, and were fairly happy with the rest of the list. Here is the top 10...
1. Pink Floyd — Dark Side Of The Moon 2. Jeff Buckley — Grace 3. Radiohead — Ok Computer 4. The Beatles — Abbey Road 5. The Beatles — Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 6. Nirvana — Nevermind 7. Led Zeppelin — Led Zeppelin 4 8. Red Hot Chili Peppers — Blood Sugar Sex Magik 9. Meat Loaf — Bat Out Of Hell 10. U2 — The Joshua Tree top 100 - http://www.abc.net.au/myf...top100.htm I don't like this list very much, so I sat down and compiled some albums I enjoy. I based this list on what I like to listen to, rather than what was new and experimental at the time, or what influenced or changed a lot of music, or what sold well. These aren't ordered from #1 - whatever, they are just alphabetical at the moment until I get around to ordering them. But have a look, and add some, take some away, I'd like the org, if we can, to make a definative list of the best albums of all-time, use this list as a starting point. Tell me what you agree with, tell me what you'd get rid of, and what you would add. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds The Beatles - Abbey Road The Beatles - Revolver The Beatles - Rubber Soul The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band The Clash - London Calling David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars The Doors - The Doors Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road The Jacksons - Destiny The Jacksons - Triumph Jeff Buckley - Grace Led Zeppelin - Untitled (Led Zeppelin IV) Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals Marvin Gaye - What's Going On Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell Michael Jackson - Off The Wall Michael Jackson - Thriller Michael Jackson - Bad Michael Jackson - Dangerous Nirvana - Nevermind Parliament Funkadelic - Mothership Connection Parliament Funkadelic - The Clones of Dr Funkenstien Parliament Funkadelic - Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Powderfinger - Vulture Street Prince - 1999 Prince - Purple Rain Prince - Sign 'O' The Times Prince - Lovesexy Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers Savage Garden - Savage Garden Stevie Wonder - Talking Book Stevie Wonder - Innervisions Stevie Wonder - Song in the Key of Life Hopefully this topic will spark some interesting discussion about the greatness of certain albums, I think this will turn out very good if people participate. So add your two cents everyone, there's not many groups as vast in musical taste as the org, so I think we can make a very definative list of the best albums of all-time. Will Prince by #1?

That's as legit an answer as any. How can there be just one out of all the albums ever released? I could never come up with an answer for it.

I learned from Pali that it's best to stress your "fave' as oppossed to "best". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I learned from Pali that it's best to stress your "fave' as oppossed to "best". People usually get "favourite" and "Best" confused. I think it should be what is the most "influencial" album of all time. That way even if you don't like something you can still acknowledge its influence. Having said all that I still think "Whats Going On" is the best album ever. [Edited 12/3/06 10:01am]

Hah, I actually checked the link now. Just another completely crappy list compiled by ignorant white people. How the hell do Wolfmother and American Idiot (among others) qualify for greatest albums of all time? Top ten features the usual b00lshit... anyone who ranks Nirvana that high should be shot. To answer the question though, I really can't say. I've posted my personal favorites countless times here before. It changes all the times though.
I was thinking about the Steely Dan post above me though. I love them to bits and would put any Steely Dan album in my own "favorites" list, but I can't believe how many people I've met that absolutely despise them. I don't even know really what to say to them actually. I mean, I love them because I love them, but the people I know who hate them REALLY have a hatred for them. I don't even know where to begin w/ them, so I don't even bother. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven
