Is anyone a Waits fan? I'm a pretty casual fan, I only have Nighthawks at the Diner.
Anyone got ORPHANS: BRAWLERS, BAWLERS AND BASTARDS? Is it any good - or more to the point, worthwhile for someone who knows very little about Waits?

Hmmm...a 3-CD set isn't exactly a casual purchase...

I have it and I'm loving it. Of course, I rarely spin any of his pre - Swordfishtrombone work. Rather than recommend Orphans, I would recommend giving it a spin at a record store listening station or getting a free listen before dropping coin.

Yeah I thought as much. He's got a couple of songs on his myspace which I like, but honestly I don't know where to go from Nighthawks...

You'd maybe do better to get some informed recommendations. Like Swordfish Trombones for weird druggy concept album stuff, or Small Change for the older lounge-style stuff.

I think it was a good move to provide 'rarities' with new music. I also think the sequencing - and how the 3 CD's are seperated - works well. I believe it's still mostly new music, but older tracks have been re-recorded when needed to make the album sound consistent. There's no denying that some of these songs are rooted to his more conventional early work.

Overall, on the Wait's scale of 'out there', this work is wierder than Rain Dogs, but not as weird as Bone Machine. Definitely not as challenging as the Black Rider, but still more than a cheap cab ride from Nighthawks at the Diner.
