LUTHER!!!. Everytime I listen to "Here and Now", I cry. The lyrics are just soo beautiful and his voice is the ultimate. If I ever went to a wedding and they started playing this song, you'd probably see me on the floor in the corner in tears. IMO, one of the best love songs of all time (my second favorite after "Adore"). Even his remakes of songs are great, "Endless Love" and especially "The Closer I Get To You" are amazing. I do love me some Barry and Teddy though. I don't understand how Peabo made the list, but Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye didn't...Donny and Marvin's voices are better than Peabo's IMO...but different strokes for different folks I guess. I think Luther. He had great arranging skills and had the chops. He could sing and put it in a great creative context.
Peabo came out strong but I don't know where he made that wrong left turn into bad crossover land. Maybe he was talking to Jeffery Osborne on his cell phone while driving. "Man when you get to the sign that says "On The Wings Of Love" you turn right. Not left." Barry is another great arranger who knew how to put his voice in a great context. With Teddy Gamble and Huff gave him some great songs and they knew how showcase his voice. All he had to is shout "Turn Em Off" and the ladies would make the room get dark. (While he was driving with his passenger he should have shouted "Take your mouth off!") "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

Although I can say I've enjoyed more of Luther's songs, I think technically speaking Peabo has the stronger voice. So I will choose Peabo. I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

shorttrini said: In my opinion, Peabo was just a good a singer as all the rest. He did so without any vocal acrobatic, unlike the others. His voice was pure and had a nice tone. There is no reason why he should not be included with these others. Just because he did not have as much record sales like the rest, does not mean a thing. For me, "Feel the fire", will always beat, some of Teddy's and Luther's material.
Very well stated. I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

Of course, since we're going down this road of omissions (another reference to Donny H.), we'd be remiss to further overlook the masterful stylings of James Ingram and Jeffrey Osbourne.

Peabo Bryson's career went like this: * a string of soul hits in the late 1970s and early 1980s such as "Keep Reaching for the Sky," "Let the Feeling Flow," "I'm So into You," "Feel the Fire" and "Tonight I Celebrate My Love" (a duet with Roberta Flack); * some pop hits in the mid-1980s (most notably "If Ever You're in My Arms Again"); * a reprise on the soul charts in the late 1980s and early 1990s (most prominently his remake of Al Wilson's "Show and Tell" and "Can You Stop the Rain"); * the pop/soundtrack circuit ("A Whole New World" with Regina Belle for the "Aladdin" soundtrack and "Beauty And Beast" with Celine Dion). At the risk of the moderator's warning, IMO Bryson is out of his weight class in this comparison. No matter what standard you use, he doesn't compare favorably with the Luther Vandross/Barry White/Teddy Pendergrass heavyweight lover men types. Bryson would compare more favorably with the likes of Jeffrey Osborne, James Ingram, etc. [Edited 12/4/06 10:32am] Agreed.

I don't know. . .I've never been that thrilled with James Ingram. But I love Jeffrey Osborne. And his voice still sounds fantastic.

The only work I'm fimiliar with by James is the stuff he did with brotha Q, but thats about as far as I wanna go in terms of exploring his body of work. Jeffrey Osbourne, now thats another story. I think this is a grossly underrated vocalist.
