What do you all think of Patti Labelle?

Does she scream too much?

I like many of her songs, but her voice can get a little too much at times.

I like belting, wailing or whatever you call it, but this just hurts my ears.
Seriously, i think she focuses too much on the power of her voice, so it`s hard to notice the songs...

Nah!

I don't think Patti wails for fun or for the sake of it or for showing off her chops as some folks would say.

When you hear her wail, she's doing exactly what Aretha, Chaka, Gladys and Mahalia Jackson b4 them all did; get their point across in their way.

Its as spontaneous as you wanna get, as opposed to the more calculated wailers such as Mariah & Whitney.

I like catching hearing her live, on TV, on award shows, whatever, would see her in concert, but not as a recording artist. (Good for her!)

For someone with a big catalog she doesn't have that many songs I like, but I do love her vocal performances. In fact I like her tone more when she's screaming and wailing.
Haven't heard the gospel stuff yet. When she was discussing it over the years I was praying she would hook up with Mervyn Warren. I hope its a good CD.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

This woman is GOD's Gift.. i got a chance to sing with her on stage and speak with her on the phone this past MAY and I can tell you that she is the real deal....

I have admired her since I was 13 yrs old and I have just about all her records from the 90's on..

The way this womans voice moves me is unexplainable.. she can take your song and sing it better then U.. Just watch LIVE AID or The motown special from back in the 80's on youtube and u'll she that no one does it better then PATTI!

Not only is she a LEGEND, she is a kind down to earth diva.. how many divas would call a fan to thank them for flowers as she did me.. ??

Bless her heart.. I love u patti

Patti can pull it off without it sounding like screaming. It still sounds like singing, just very powerful.

Her voice annoys me. When she reins it in I can tolerate it, but I'll take Stephanie, Deniece, Aretha, or even Whitney anyday over her. smile

Patti has so much soul in her it's incredible. She is a genuine, gracious woman who gives praise to her fellow divas rather than bash them. Always the professional and I'm patiently wating on a Cyndi Lauper-Patti duets album....It's gonna happen y'al....I'm praying hard!!!!!

All in all, once you see her live..it's all over...Over the Rainbow that is!!! I almost had cardiac arrest witnessing Ms. Patti perform this 20 feet in front of me...

peace

In general I think she has a unique voice. She's the only I can tolerate the yelling from. Sometimes it's a bit much but there are times when it truly touches me. She can give me goosebumps and move me to tears.

I dig Patty when she is singing in a REGULAR tone. As soon as she starts screaming I'm turn off and tune her out. She is way over the top 4 my taste. A little bit is okay but she goes way overboard. I'm much rather listen to Rachael Ferrelle, Conya Doss, or Jill Scott.

Patti is so dramatic. I love her.

I went to her gospel concert back in October.

love it is a fate resigned

and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame

I love Patti. She is one of those few singers who have the gift to make you feel what they're singing about. Especially on the song "If You Asked Me To" That's her at her best.

I love Patti, she's a soul music legend. It's been awhile since she's done a great album though. She needs to go into the studio with Gamble and Huff and Thom Bell and make a real soul album.Get back to basics.

Patti's great but her over singing can be a bit much. A great example of Patti singing in a very restrained voice (for most of the song, anway) is "If You Asked Me To". It works that she starts low then erupts. Great singer!
