How Do You Know For Sure If You're "Too Old" OR "Too Mature" For Hip-Hop/Rap?

http://blog.myspace.com/i...0f06287b92

How can you really tell if you outgrown rap?

Is it because of the genre's current change of directions? Or is it because you have gone through some changes in your life?

If you have stop listen to hip-hop/rap, what made you do so?

If you're still listening, what made you "true to the genre" for this long period of time?

There's rap for grown folks, like De La Soul.

There is also more challenging (unconventional) material out there.

That is funny! lol But THIS is a true story of one of my closest friends. When he got married and then became ready to be a first time father, he downright stop listening to rap altogether (especially gangsta rap). His main thing is to be able to be a positive role model/mentor to his children. smile

Oh my, I love when kids think 30 is "old" lol You'll see what I'm saying in about a minute, that's how fast the shit flies lol

I'm 35, I still like rap but it's the KIND of rap we're talking about - can't handle all this dirty South shit w/ muthafuckas literally screaming @ me disbelief And not just the delivery but the content - I hope everyone reaches a point where wallowing in stupid shit becomes too much...

But give me some Mos Def or some Common, etc. & I'm good smile

And honestly - are any of these new mf's good? confused When I do hear little snippets I either hear mumbling or screaming - WTF is that?? hmph!

Yea, I'm too old for most of the current rap climate lol
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

You are never too old for hip hop or rap. I am 38 and I listen on the regular to Little Brother, Common, De La Soul, Baby Jaymes, the Strange Fruit Project, etc...

If it is wack rap - I reject it. Just the same as I reject wack R&B, or rock or any music.

...I don't enjoy the 'bitch this.., bitch that', stuff. I don't enjoy the POP/Rap bullshit like Black Eyed Peas. Other than two cuts I thought Busta Ryhmes latest was poop (but he got my money)

I still and always will enjoy classics from Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest and more.

Many of today's artists say some worthwhile stuff too. MOS DEF, and Talib Kweli come to mind.

New Orleans Bounce is another type of hip-hop. It's based upon Miami Bass (because of the Roland TR-808 drum machine), but it also predates Atlanta/Mississippi Crunk (which BTW, is nothing but a slow-tempo version of Bounce), and Houston Screwed Music.

90% of all Bounce "songs" contain samples from New Orleans' one-hit wonder rap group "Drag Rap (Triggerman)" by the Showboys.

There are those that have listen to rap, but have favorite rap artists that might have been before your time: The Soul Sonic Force, The Egyptian Lover, Kurtis Blow, U.T.F.O., Sequence, The Real Roxanne, RUN-DMC, Pretty Tony, LL Cool J, .....hell, anyone before 1988! lol

SIDENOTE: As you know, 88-93 is my favorite hip-hop era. But I have some favorite rap artists outside of that era (mostly 2pac, Jay-Z & OutKast).

I agree. When I see folks over 35 still listening to this music,I chuckle.Hip hop is music for youth.Older folks can't possibly keep up with all the latest slang terms.

I've seen plenty of brothers who look way over the age of 35 blasting this mess in their cars.
Just once,I'd like to see a car ride past me blasting Coltrane or Funkadelic, but nooooo these knuckleheads don't know nothing about music or anything else.
I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

When you're old enough to realize that 95% of it nowadays is as slow as a damn opera song. Older folks can remember when rap was funky and danceable. Most of the younger people have been taking geritol since the day they were born.

I've seen a few and they look fucking rediculous. They are usually worthless thug trash though, that the rest of their generation scrapes off the bottom of their shoe.

Again as i said before with the exception of LL Cool J, RUN DMC, and Kurtis Blow the rest of the acts you can't even name two hits from them and in the case of Egyptian Lover he wasn't hip hop he was ELECTRO music, that had rap influences, i mean seriously now as i said before and i will say it again most of this site name drops and never really listened to hip hop, so they can continue and name drop X-Clan, Mos Def, Paris, Public Enemy,
