Gloria Estefan's legacy

I'm now ripping my Gloria estefan cds to mp3...

So what does the org consider the legacy of this woman?

Damm...Conga is still fresh after all these years.

Even some of her most recent singles like Hoy and Tres gotas de agua bendita are better than anything that's on the radio.

I grew up with her music in my household...my brother was obsessed with her when Miami Sound Machine came out with 'Dr Beat'...she almost a part of my family!!!

I have tremendous respect for Gloria as she and MSM put Latinos on the mainstream map in the mid-80's when all we really had was Julio Iglesias and Charo (no disrespect to them of course!)...'Conga' was a breakout hit but at the same time...you knew if this is all they had to offer..then we would now be talking about Miami Sound Machine as one hit wonders...but they were more and putting her in front made them appealing to the masses.

Sure, their early output can be written off as Adult Contemporary with hints of Latin American instrumentation. But starting with 1993's 'Mi Tierra' and on, they really showed off many different sides to them. From the Cuban son of that album to the South American influenced 'Abriendo Puertas', to the afro-Cuban 'Destiny' and the Disco hysteria that was 'Gloria'...she and MSM proved them selves over and over again.

Her husband Emilio really put Miami music on the map in the late 90's and had a hand in the crossover successes of Ricky Martin, Shakira, Thalia, and Albita to name a few.

VIVA GLORIA...you're a trailblazer and inspiration to all Latinos everywehre!

Emilio had is paw in making shakira crossover to the English audience. Shame the lyrical magic of Shakira went away when she started writting songs in English.

just saying she made the latin cross over to mainstream america possible, and the fact Emilo and Gloria both had input on laundry service.

and i first heard of Shakira in a newsweek article from early 1999 when they were comparing her to Alanis, and one of my friends at USD was a big Shakira fan and as was i long before her USA breakthroguh

i have mad respect for Shakira.

Gloria has to be given respect and credit for her opening the door to crossover and just putting Latin Artists into mainstream culture. People from Salma Hayek to JLO to Ricky Martin to Jimmy Smitts all benefited from this and many more too. But EMILIO in my opinion has to be given alot of credit and I think should be regarded as one of the Best producers of all time. He still is very active with working with artists from Shakira to Paulina to Alejandro to Juanes and many more. Hey even had this 3 girl group a few years ago called MSM which were an updated Miami Sound Machine that were great and big in Spain, but couldnt get anything going in the USA from Sony, and i know Emilio was very hurt by that.

Connie Francis is one of my favorites too. She wasn't Spanish but she had a lot of songs that were in spanish. According to wikipedia, Gloria wrote the screenplay for an upcoming movie about Connie's life.

Quote:
The screenplay for a movie based on Francis' life, titled Who's Sorry Now? is done, and filming is anticipated in 2007, Gloria Estefan said in a news conference. Latin music star Gloria Estefan wrote the screenplay. She will produce and play the lead. Estefan said, "She [Francis] isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and yet she was the first pop star worldwide, and has recorded in nine languages. She has done a lot of things for victims' rights since her rape in the '70s . . . There's a major story there."

you'd be surprised how hardcore they (the Estefans) have their hands pulling the strings behind the scenes w the music business in flordia. sort of like the secret dons/gatekeepkers to all things musical there...unless there are outsiders coming in who already have a high degree of commercial success.

...but EVERYTHING. and i mean EVERYTHING happens through glorita and her husband. the gateway to everything in commerical american music, as based in miami, goes through THEIR hands first. the smart ones use them as a starting point though, then run as fast as they can...

I liked her better when she was with Miami Sound Machine. Her sound was too Pop, as a solo artist.
