so,did any of you see this movie? Was it actually released back in 1979? This film is very mysterious and I don't know anyone who has seen it.

Never saw the movie, but the album is beautiful and brilliant.

Unfortunately, it was slammed by critics.

I have this album.....my favorite cuts are , Send one your love,Flower Power, and Outside My Window. Yes, it was strange sounding when it first came out, now I can really appreciate it.

Stevie's most adventurous album so far. I really love this album but I can only listen to it once every 3 months for some reason.

It is a great album by Stevie, when he was still in his creative zone. I dig "Flower Power".

It came out after the success of "Songs In The Key Of Life"

That's why critics were harsh on this one confused

Motown thought it was shit, too.

Barney Ales: "My God," I thought. How could we do this? It was so terrible. Roshkind was really running the company then. He was good at PR, and I told him it should be cut from a double album to just one, and even then it won't sell. Vigoda (Wonder's manager) went nuts and everyone was afraid to tell Stevie it was pure crap.

'SITKOL' was a hard album to follow. There was no way that Stevie could top it.To his credit,he came up with something entirely different and unexpected.

THANK YOU! I love this album, it gets so maligned by critics and even Motown back in the day. But I remember buying the cd my freshman year in college during Christmas break in 1994. I think it's etheral and awesome.

i have seen this movie, the stevie footage with him singing secret life is the last scene in the movie, i used 2 have it but i allowed a friend 2 borrow it and im still waiting 4 it lol

its a documentary and quite a good one, the album in my opinion along with innervisions 4 me is his best most artistic work.

Come back as a flower, and power flower are unlike anything he has done b4 or since truly great.
Seeing him walk about like that no shades, its like the talking book cover come 2 life.

That's how most critics and fans reacted (understandable from a Pop (money) perspective), but not all of them. Some, especially in Jazz magazines like Downbeat, along with magazines like Musician magazine (and papers like The Washington Post) hailed the album's release, with Musician magazine predicting that Stevie would go on to become like Ellington, and compose Suites and Jazz pieces. Unfortunately, Stevie got stung by the popular attitude towards the album, and he hasn't tried anything that daring since, preferring to stay in that safe middle ground....

Great album, though I admit to playing certain songs (Outside My Window, Same Old Story, Flower Power Send One Your Love) The power and sadness of songs like Black Orchid and The Secret Life of Plants are just amazing; very emotional, I can feel that Stevie sang here. But some of the instrumentals were engaging ( Finale, First Garden, Voyage to India, Eccelesiastes) and the straight african feel of Kesse Ye Lolo De Ye and Ai, No, Sono seem to mirror each other, as well oppose; in language and instrumentation.

Doesn't mean the album wasn't still challenging; Earths Creation took a while to appreciate; Venus Fly Trap is weird but forgettable; A Seeds A Star is a good meledy and song, but it sounds so fake trying to be live and well... not mixed well. And Race Babbling I can't get into it at all. Its challenging but rewarding if you stick around and overall there is a mystical almost otherworldy feel and sound to this album; no wonder why a lot of us mere mortals couldn't dig the Journey.
At this point in history, we have a choice to make

'Secret Life Of Plants' is an interesting, highly creative album but I can never really get into it.There's too many instrumentals, too many quiet moments, not enough singing. The songs "Send One Your Love" and "Outside My Window" are superb, though.
