Z Cult Question/What Is Your Fave Stones Ballad? In light of all of the Stones threads that are around, being a Stones fan, I thought I'll join in on the bus. I mentioned on the Beast of Burden thread that I really felt the Stones shined the most when it came to ballads. My all-time favorite ballad by them is "Fool To Cry". This was the first song released from their album "Black and Blue". And it's such a beautiful song. Very Ohio Player-ish, ala "I Want To Be Free". Anyway, other Stone ballads such as "Angie", "Wild Horses" and the underrated "Waiting On A Friend" are high up on the list. What id your fave Stones ballad? A song from one of their underrated albums...
...Coming Down Again If I thought about this more, there'd be others that i'd probably favor more. I've been listening to this album most recently. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. You name them "Angie" & "Fool to cry" I also like the "B" side "Hot Stuff" (even though that wasn't a ballad)

You're the first person on this site that has copped to liking "Fool To Cry". I'm like, always out there alone. On so many things. Cool. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Ive grown to like 'Fool to Cry' more in recent years. I especially like towards the end of the song where they get a nice little groove going with some nice melodic guitar playing by Keith(I think) and Jagger getting into some nice soulful shouting.
I also know that the ballad 'Winter' is loved by many Stones fans, though I don't think I'd list it as one of my favorites. I probably would add a ballad from their later years off the 'Steel Wheels' album called 'Almost hear you sigh' which many have called a Curtis Mayfield type ballad with great vocals from Jagger and a nice classical guitar solo from Keith.

No Expectations, one of my favourite stones' songs period.
If the Stones can be said to be under-rated in any way, it's that they don't get enough recognition for being a great ballad band. [Edited 11/30/06 18:45pm]

Heah ya' go Brutha' Black http://www.youtube.com/wa...DrMY-l3AzM Aaah yeahhhh...thanx my brother. I should have KNOWN u dug this cut as well. Although I mentioned this song was influenced by The Ohio Players's "I Want To Be Free", "Fool" inspired The Time's cut "Girl". From the keyboard string melody line to the backing vocals, Prince showed his love for "Fool To Cry" with "Girl"by The Time. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Wild Horses
but if You Can't Always Get What You Want qualifies then that's a tough one I'm going to start studying my Stones. I keep seeing names of songs I've never heard. There's so many! [Edited 12/1/06 23:06pm]

To be honest, I think the fans of the Stones in 76 wasn't at all ready for such a display of total love and commitment to black music from The Stones. The fans knew that the Stones were true r&b/blues purists from the get. But, the Stones hadn't embraced the funk element in black music as deeply as they did with Black and Blue. Even in the title of the album, their telling their fans where they were truly coming from. Black music and the blues. Which, to them, equals the same thing.
