FOR MICHEAL'S HARDCORE FANS..IS HIS LEGACY GONNA BE BASED SOLELY ON RECORD SALES?

I GREW UP ON MJ BUT HAVENT BEEN INTERESTED IN HIM IN YEARS, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT TURN ME OFF IS HIS AND HIS FANS OBSESSION WITH RECORD SALES.ITS LIKE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO HIS LEGACY IS THAT HE OUTSELLS EVERY OTHER ARTIST IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC.I WISH HE WOULD HAVE MADE HIS BIG RETURN TO THE SPOTLIGHT AT AN EVENT THAT WASNT GIVING HIM SOME KINDA AWARD FOR..ONCE AGAIN RECORD SALES.

It's just that record sales are the only thing people can't argue against. You can argue that Thriller isn't the best album in history, but you can't argue that it's the best selling album in history. So that why MJ fans bring up sales. If a Prince says "Thriller's not that great, there are better albums out there, like Purple Rain" to an MJ fan, they would reply "yeh but Thriller sold 104 million, Purple Rain sold like a tenth of that".

Exactly. And who can blame MJ fans for bragging about record sales when their idol is attacked on his looks & life style every time his name is mentioned. It must be difficult to be a MJ fan when the criticism is so overwhelming.

Agreed Diana. Thriller is the best Pop music album ever made. Pop music ALWAYS goes by album sales. Not the quality of the music. If we're going to judge albums by record sales, We might as well say that Fergie's album is better then John Mayer's. And we all know that's not true.

but who's fault is that? he made himself look like that and he chose his lifestyle.he is not the only artist thats attacked by the media. i just think its sad that this man has been a great entertainer all his life but the only thing his fans talk about are his record sales.i never see a mj fan talk about the great memories a certain mj album bring to them, or what they were doin when a song came out..all i hear is thriller sold 100 mil or mj is the biggest selling artist in history or he passed the beatles and elvis.when i think of thriller i think about wearing mj buttons and having my room covered in his posters and watching him on those award shows, not how many records he sold.

I think lot of the newer fans have actually missed out on MJ most memorable moments. If you go to a fansite the average age of a fan seems to be about 24. Now, considering that "Thriller" came out 24 yrs ago, most of these fans memories of Michael will probably start from the Bad or Dangerous era. Therefore already they have missed out on many of the best moments of Michael career. To them Michael is all about, King of Pop, Peter Pan , hype, hysteria and record sales. confused

If you were an older fan, you will remember so much more than hype, record sales and the Moonwalk. I remember for instance watching BBC2 and seeing the Destiny Tour on and getting all excited. I remember when OTW came and the video of "Don't Stop till you Get Enough" first being shown on Top of The Pops. I also remember my friend getting The Truimph album for her birthday, and playing again and again "Time Waits For No". I also remember rushing home and waiting in excitment for the Diana Ross Special to come on TV, because Michael was one of the featured guests. And all this was way before Thriller came out.

Michael's goal was to make the biggest selling album of all time, long before Thriller was released.

APPLAUSE!!!! You are so on point. EVERYWHERE you look, you see Michael's legacy. The great thing is that these young performers are not going to let anyone forget Michael's legacy. I even hear little kids talking about Michael if they see a certain person dance with MJ moves. How do these kids know about Michael's dancing when he hasn't released a new album or his music is not played on radio daily? They know because they see Chris Brown, Usher, Beyonce, Ciara, Kanye West and every pop act give him his props. Even with the concentrated and contrived media negativity, Michael's legacy CONTINUES to shine through. The detractors have done everything to try and diminish that legacy and they are failing.

Usher and Justin Timberlake? Yeah, he's got a legacy, but is it a good one, if that's who's carrying on the tradition?

You need to get out more if the only thing that you hear MJ fans speak of is that Thriller is the biggest selling album in history. Of course, fans talk about that because every album that Michael releases is compared to Thriller. No other artist is subjected to this type of crap. They don't mention that Prince has never come anywhere close to repeating Purple Rain status. The media doesn't call his album sales a failure, even when the album barely goes gold like his latest album. Can you imagine the media AND
public outrage if Michael had GIVEN albums away as Prince did when concert tickets were bought? Everyone, including the majority of Prince's fans, just sat back and accepted it because it was Prince. The same thing would have happened if Madonna had done the same thing. The sad thing is that people are so conditioned to Michael being torn apart, they don't see the double standards that he has to put up with. Invincible sold OVER 2 million in the US and the media deemed it a failure, when NONE of Michael's peers were selling anymore. Is there any wonder that Michael's fans have the NEED defend him by pointing out what the media is trying to diminsh-his record sales. Btw, Michael fans do concentrate on other things other than album sales. All you have to do is to visit fan boards where the talk is about what is the favorite MJ performance, album, video, single, etc. We, as fans, also love the MAN, not only his music. When he hurts, we hurt. When he is happy, we are happy. From being on this site, I know that Prince fans feel the same about him.Until I came here, I never realized that Prince fans were so worried about his album sales. Boy, was I wrong. Prince fans are as worried as we are when it comes to our artist. It really pisses me off when other fans try and pretend that they don't care if their favorite artist's album is selling or not. Therefore, don't try and act like MJ fans are THAT much different from Prince, Madonna, Janet or any other artist's fans.

"He made himself look that way and chose that lifestyle..."

What is that supposed to mean? You must be young if you think that the media's negativity toward Michael started because his skin turned "white". Go back and look at how the media started treating him when they thought that he was a threat to Elvis. Go back to how they started demonizing him when he bought the Beatles' cataloge. Go back to the media's hate for him when he started breaking every "record" known in the music industry. It has shit to do with the "way that he looks". That is only an EXCUSE to use to the pubic for their constant negativty toward him. If people would use common sense, you would realize that the way that Michael looks now, is the way that he has looked for over a DECADE. The way that some of you go on, you would think that he SUDDENLY started lookig different. I am also wondering what you mean by "he chose that lifestyle". What lifestyle are you speaking of? It is not his fault that everytime that he goes to take piss that the obsessed media is there to talk about it. During Michael's "down time" betwen albums, he basically tries to stay out ofthe public's eye. However, people like Roger Friedman is riding MJ's jock every single day wondering what he is doing, writing article after article about how "broke" he is, and then having to turn around and backtrack his lies. Can you imagine the crap that all of us would have exposed, if the media were in our business and personal lives, as they are with Michael's. Let's be for real, this man is not treated fairly, and you know it.

You sound like one of those fans who believe Michael only had "two nose jobs", because he said so.

I admire your devotion to him, but fortunately we are not on a Michael Jackson fansite, so therefore I can say alot of what you say is BS. The media is pain, we all know that, We know that they will build you up to knock you down again.

But MJ butchered his own face, wears awful wigs and leaves his life open to some of the worse speculation. Wigs, holes in the chin, loads of nose jobs have nothing to do with vitiligo, even if you believe he has got it, which I don't. Neither, has it got anything to do with the media. These are things Michael did to himself and only those who are blindly in love with the man, will think otherwise.

The media also has nothing to do with Michael obsession with young children that has led to two accusations of abuse, these are Michael's choices. The media can exaggerate, lie and distort things, and unfortunately Michael gives them the ammunation to do this again and again with his own bizarre behaviour, which is open to questions.

An obsesse, hard-core fan, which it seems you are, blames all MJ woes on the media and never question anything Michael does, infact they nearly alway justify it.

Unfortunately, his legacy(and immense talent (1970-1987-before megalomania set in) will always be overshadowed by his personal eccenetricities.

I am not a hardcore fan of MJ(by any means), but the numbers are the only concrete thing that aren't really up for debate. With that being said, being the leader in sales doesn't always qualify one as being the best in his/her genre.

If you have a problem with my defense of him, then you need to skip my response. It seems that you are one of those, who would hate him, even if he still wore and afro and had the broad nose. It always seems that other artists' fans, ex. Prince fans like you, are the "pot" calling the "kettle" black. You are a hard-core and most likely obsessed fan. You defend Prince. That's good. I just happen to be in thread that is disscusing MJ.I defend Michael. What's good for you, is good for me. We both defend our favorite artists because we WANT to. This forum is a great forum for discussng OTHER artists, as well as Prince, and that is why I like it. The big question is:"Why is it alright for people like you to diss Michael, yet think that his fans can't defend him?" Well, it just doesn't work that way, at least not in my case. Handle it.

You see, you are assuming. razz I didn't even bring Prince into the post, where have I defended Prince. I haven't even compared Prince with Michael. And I am not a hater, just because I don't agree with your analogy it doesn't mean I hate him. I just don't agree with his lifestyle in the last 20 yrs and I don't agree with fans like you who justify everything he does. And because we are on non-MJ fansite I can say that if I want to.

If you can't stand what people outside the fan community think of Michael you really shouldn't be here, throwing assumptions like "I wouldn't have liked Michael if he had an afro and with a broad nose". Because you have no idea when I became a fan of Michael(alhtoug I am more of a casual fan nowadays) and why I became a fan and when I stopped being such a hardcore fan who felt I needed to defend him ever thing that was his own doing.

For better or worse, MJ is the Elvis Presley of the MTV generation. The bigger the success the bigger the crash back to earth. The only difference is that MJ isn't dead yet...I think.

the best way to answer that is to look at the title banner at the top of this page.
