I kinda like screaming. I´d take Xtina over J-Lo anytime.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

The great vocalists knew that there was a time to scream and shout. Sure Chaka could belt, but she could also purr...I don't think most of the new singers know anything about tension and release, and how to build emotion in a song

This is a really important point, I think. In acting, there's a concept known as "finding the arc." The idea is that you need to discover your character's emotional high and low points and play them accordingly.

If you make a character run hot all the time -- it's boring and/or exhausting for the audience.

It's the same thing with singing. Great vocalists are able to find the arc of a song. Listen to Sarah Vaughan singing Gershwin sometime -- a singer who understood the arc performing the works of a songwriter who understood the arc. It's a real epiphany.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
