Yeah, it used to be a wonderful, inventive, inspiring genre. Now most hip hop is one long dull, predictable cliche. Which is why I've stopped paying attention to any of the new acts. One look at the CD covers and you know exactly what it's going to sound like.

I thought that was what Kanye West was doing, but people are getting distracted by his outbursts.

As I see it, Kanye is a gifted producer, and an occasionally gifted MC, but the quality of his work barely makes up for his colossal self-centeredness and egoism on and off the mic.

Can you cite some work where I might find this "gifted" Kanye on display? Because I see a lot of watered-down stuff and plenty of samples - in other words, Diddy but with a bit more savvy in terms of sample selection.

"Jesus Walks"
"Through The Wire"
"We Major"
"Late"
"Heard'em Say"
"The Food" (Common)
"Get By" (Talib Kweli)
"Shock Body" (Talib Kweli)
"Faithful" (Common)

and various other production tracks. he's not the savior of hip-hop but shouldn't be sold short by putting him in Diddy's league.

Diddy didn't do most of the true production on some of the most famous albums anyway.

Correct! IMO, 3 things happen that was the beginning of the end for mainstream rap:

1. When the major record labels decided to only take the "gangsta" style of rap seriously for the fastest increase in record sales.....meaning all the other styles of rap were excluded from FM Radio, MTV, & BET.

Exactly. Keep anything out long enough that might require R&B acts, or even rappers, from coming up with original grooves and melodies that would require the playing of some instruments, and eventually you will have a generation that knows no better, likes what you dish out to them, and never wants a style change that might cost more to make.

3. Too much of weed & absolut in the studio has [b]forever place a typical hip-hop track at a slow tempo of 95 BPM or less!:disbelief:

You can say that again! They wouldn't know how to party if a party were to bite them in the ass!

That is the most rediculous statement I have ever heard. Who do you think made rap the modern day pop music? It was white people. If they didn't like it, it would still be only on R&B radio like it used to be. Also, the styles would have changed LONG ago because black people have always moved on to other styles in the past. Everyone I know that complains about rap music is black. Most white folks, especially young ones, could care less.

rolleyes

The problem with your argument is that there are many black people who feel that rap videos are minstrel shows. How can they be "racist"?

Thank you, you beat me to the punch. He needs to study his music history, especially the R&B side, before making a statement like that. Rap was never the bullshit it became until white people got into it. Also, a racist white person would have no problem with rap music because with all the violence it promotes, the use of the word "nigger", the "keeping it real", and all the other degrading images, they see it as black people "staying in their place" in a violent ghetto away from them.

Well, I agree about the modern-day minstrel shows bka rap videos. I saw one on the other day and commented that if you muted the television it seemed like a comedy skit. They're like outtakes from Hollywood Shuffle.

Do you mind me asking where you live and what age the kids were? I am a teacher, so I am around high school/college freshman daily. I'm usually up on the latest slang, but I haven't heard this. I didn't think this generation knew what a "coon" was.

I agree. I don't get what all the hype is about. He does an awful lot of sampling and interpolation. Usually, the samples/interpolations aren't very creative. However, he has produced some nice tracks for people like Talib Kweli and Common, but overall I don't think he's anywhere near as great as he seems to think (or wants us to think) he is. He stands out among the current crop of hip hoppers, yet mediocrity should not be the standard by which we measure greatness.

That's right! Since the debut of Niggaz With Attitude (1988), too many rappers wanted to be them (CORRECTION:...be more controversial than them) and the rest is history. Just ask 50 Cent.

WORD TO THE WISE, WHEN YOU TRY TO BELITTLE OTHERS, MAKE SURE YOU SPELL THE WORD CORRECTLY IT IS MINSTREL NOT MINSTRAL

i wonder did white people call those Heavy metal videos back in the day MINSTREL or a disgrace to the race.I highly doubt it.

And it kills me but why do we as black people always feel that music or the entertainment field is suppose to be dropping knowledge, and helping the community. If you are looking at rap videos or any entertainment field as your uplifting place for conscious programs, you are looking in the wrong place, and always have. Entertainment field is about making dollars, i hear 10 million black people scream for conscious music, yet i check Common, Roots, Talib,Mos Def and all your other name dropping I LOVE conscious rapsters and see that combined sold 1.5 million, so buy there albums, so we can have a fake consciouss movement again, like we did with all the Goin back To Africa songs that we were getting in the late 80's.(SUCH SHAME THAT ONLY THE The Boys TOOK THE MESSAGE SERIOUSLY)

Was Prince a minstrel show when he was dressing in female panties and running around the stage, in high heels, oh no that was just ART.

i mean i hear Cosby going off the handle about BET, so if Cosby only wants to show the positive aspects of Black Community, put your money where your mouth is, and create a positive black channel,be about it if you want to call somebody and degrade them, then i should see u upgrading your community instead of just talking, cuz ALL YALL ARE DOING IS TALKIN LOUD AND AINT SAYING NUTHIN

2. BTW, you're wrong! There were white people (the parents of those white teens) that complain about heavy metal being the music of the devil by corrupting the minds of their children. I remember during the 80's that metal bands like Motley Crew, WASP, and Judas Priest were always on top of the most controversial music list according to those church leaders on Sunday. And please don't get me started about the "backward masking" controversy, because those Southern Bapists were playing those records backward to search for another message from Satan & his demons!
