I liked most of their productions back then but nowadays,it's obvious that some of them didn't age well.A perfect example is "Girlfriend" by Pebbles. In 1988,that song was cool. These days,I change the station when they play it on the radio.

more crappy R&B songs from the 80s....
***"Rhythm Of The Night" by DeBarge (1985)---DeBarge burst onto the scene in the early 80s with a sweet, soulful sound that was hard to resist.Their early singles ("All This Love","Time Will Reveal","I Like It") have become R&B classics, rightfully so.But in 1985,they went pop.The single "Rhythm Of The Night" is annoying and just plain dumb, with trite lyrics ("I know a place where we can dance the whole night away...underneath electric stars") and the then-typical Carribean-influenced sound that so many other folks were doing.DeBarge were a great group, but this is not the way I want to hear them. ***"Love Will Save The Day" by Whitney Houston (1988)---This turkey was produced by Madonna's old producer Jellybean.Probably the all-time worst Whitney Houston single. ***"Coming To America" by The System (1988)---dreadful pop garbage. When The System started doing crap like this, their career came to a premature end. ***"It's Real" by James Ingram (1989)---I recall an interview where James admitted that even he hated this song, insisting that the record company forced him to do it.A voice like his deserves better than a lame New Jack Swing groove.Save songs like this for less talented folks like Al B Sure or Bobby Brown! ***"20/20" by George Benson (1985)---his most boring single ever. ***"Pleasure Seekers" by The System (1985)---The System were actually a good group but they released their share of lackluster singles.

I'm with you on the Bar-Kays "Freakshow". ...Sad because Boogie Body Land, and Move Your Boogie Body are fi-yah!!!! Hell yeah! When the Bar Kays are good, they are VERY good. It's too bad that,in the 80s,they felt that they needed to constantly "borrow" from other songs.

Thriller - MJ Walk this Way - RUN DMC & Aerosmith Just wack... Dynamite - Jermaine Jackson Whammy - One Way System of Survival - Earth, Wind & Fire D.Y.B.O - Starpoint Good, Bad & Ugly - Charlie Singleton ...And I was too hard on Billy Ocean - I also liked Syncopation by him. ...But I did detest When the Going Gets Tough. I like "Syncopation" too! His 'Suddenly' album is pretty good, for the most part.It was mostly his latter singles that really, really suck.

SoulAlive said: "***"Freakshow On The Dancefloor" by the Bar Kays(1984)---I love the Bar Kays, but let's be honest.Too many of their songs sound just like other artists' songs! This song is a blatant rip-off of Midnight Star's superior "No Parking On The Dancefloor". Oddly enough,I think most of their other "copycat" singles are pretty good, but this is dreadful."
You lost me on this one -- "Freakshow on the Dancefloor" was one of The Bar-Kays' biggest hits and better singles. I thought it had more of a new-wave sound than an ape of Midnight Star's "No Parking on the Dancefloor." I will admit the synthesizer riff on the chorus is a copy-cat, but there is plenty of The Bar-Kays' personality in that song. These are also some individual bullshit songs I can think of for right now.... Superwoman - Karyn White Just Got Paid - Johnny Kemp I Wanna Be Rich - Calloway Casanova - Levert Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFarren Don't Rock The Boat - Midnight Star Ghostbusters - Ray Parker, Jr. I Just Can't Stop Loving You - Michael Jackson Headlines - Midnight Star Who's Zoomin' Who - Aretha Franklin K-I-S-S-I-N-G - Seidda Garrett ? I know this is all a personal opinion, but your personal dislike of Anita Baker or Freddie Jackson (and you may as well throw in Luther Vandross in this bag of soul vocal acts, because he definitely fits in) is different from someone making a creatively inferior and/or dated song. I agree with you on some of the songs you named, but the ones I highlighted are the ones with which I disagreed. I also would not call Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" a soul music song, since it was one that exclusively was played and appealed to a white market. SoulAlive said: I can't believe so many of you are dissing Whitney's 80s hits.I like several songs by her:
"You Give Good Love"---a sparkling, soulful song "Saving All My Love For You" "Thinking About You" with Kashif---this is actually my favorite song from her debut album." Then you have the incredbly mawkish "How Will I Know" and the sappy "Greatest Love of All" on Whitney Houston's debut album. Then in 1987, her second album "Whitney" was full of sickening songs such as "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," "So Emotional," "Didn't We Almost Have it All," etc. THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. Actually, Phil Collins' "Sussudio" reached No. 6 on the Billboard soul music charts in 1985 so it qualifies. However, I have to disagree on your opinion -- if I had to name a Phil Collins song, it would have to be his duet with Phillip Bailey, "Easy Lover." I'm sure that of no small coincidence is that the former songs were performed by the more urgent, soulful Sharon Bryant and the "Secret Lovers"/"Always" era came when Atlantic Starr replaced Bryant and brought in Barbara Weathers as the female lead.
