Funky Fusioneer Track of the Day - Do Whatcha Wanna

In an effort to expand my daughter's drumming horizons beyond the Metal players she's currently infatuated with, I decided to put together a disc for her that included Power drummers from another genre.

Searching through some discs, I ran across one of the original big-kit Power Players...

...Billy Cobham.

This isn't one of the tunes I picked for her disc but Do Whatcha Wanna brought back some nice memories.

Funky tune written and nicely sung by George Duke.
The 8th note bassline pattern through the verses is reminicent of Sly's Family Affair.

This tune strangely shows up initially on a George Duke produced Billy Cobham compilation disc...

...The Best of Billy Cobham almost as an afterthought.

As if some suit said, "We need a Pop tune with all this crazy Fusion stuff."

...the tune was on this album first.

And since that is also on YME, I'm going to give it a listen. I really liked that number. Thanks for the recommendation. Good instrumentation all around.

Glad you liked it.

Be aware that none of the other tunes on either album are like that. smile

Do like I did with Jennifer and Amy.....play it in the car whilst YOU are driving and in control, not them....it all has to do with exposure.

Amy is now a jazz aficionado, thanks to her wicked ex-stepmother....moi.

If your daughter has a musical curiosity and seeks inspiration for her work, diversity in musical taste will come to her as she matures....have patience, Dad.

As you and I both know, if music is in you, you keep it as your best friend for the balance of your life....it is an addiction that you cannot leave alone and the learning cannot stop.

I used that trick to the max on both my kids when they were younger.
Doesn't work anymore. Now they just bring their portable players. music
