Babyface:Thread

this Guy at one time seemed like a Fire-Cracker Non-Stop&then all of a Sudden He has Cooled Off.but the Guy had a Decade Run like so few.He seemed at one time to Quote Barry Manilow"To Write the Songs that the Whole World Sang"? not to mention running a Label&Writing&Producing for a ton of People. His Early Deele Days as a member also Working with Midnight Star among others.now He has been Ripped for basically playing the same song for years.funny thing though about Him: Mick Jagger always seems to dig the Hottest R&B Act out at any given time&Face was Hot Hot but Mick wasn't feeling His stuff but Keith Richards dug Him.Madonna Said His Songs are like Rose ROyces but also Called Him a Good Pop Artist. He use to be a Camp Ground Leader or something&Met Michael Jackson as a Kid&Got Inspired to be in the Business.any thoughts on Babyface& His Creativity&Success??

Take a Bow, I'll Make Love to You, and Water Runs Dry are three of the most moving songs to have come out in the last ten years. Babyface has a lot of talent to write such beautiful melodies. Too bad his solo work hasn't been quite as up to par as the songs he has written for others.

Essence

I respect his better work as writer and producer but he doesn't cut it for me as a solo artist overall.

I was in awe of his work on the writing and producing of all of the new material on the "Waiting To Exhale" soundtrack...(minus "My Funny Valentine", of course). I mean, what an incredible insight!

From the Mary J. Blige's excellent rendition of "Not Gon' Cry", 2 Brandy's "Sittin' Up In My Room"... the soundtrack actually rivals the movie in production and heart. This was his baby, and u can tell!

My absolute favorite song from Babyface, however, was from his album "The Day", the song..."The Day (That You Gave Me A Son)". Oh My God. What a beautiful piece of work...and if any of u have kids, or u're a dad who's wife gave u a son, u've gotta hear that song. So beautiful. I actually cried when I 1st heard it...it was written in '96, the year my 1st son was born. So, I guess that had a lot 2 do with it.

Actually, I do love his work though. I think there's still more in him. His creative juices r always flowing, and hopefully will never run out. He's a class act, with an untarnished record... I wish him well.

Babyface was a member of The Deele back in the 80s.I still have their first album on vinyl somewhere.Remember the singles "Body Talk" and "Just My Luck" from 1984? Their second album in 1985 featured kickass songs like "Sweet November" (later covered by Troop) and a beautiful song called "I'll Send You Roses" that SHOULD have been a single.

By the time their third album came out in 1987,Babyface was already writing and producing songs for others (The Whispers' "Rock Steady").He also released his first solo album that year.Remember the hits "I Love You Babe" and the underrated "Mary Mack"? After hearing those songs,I knew he would eventually become very successful.

Babyface's second solo album 'Tender Lover'(1989) is a MASTERPIECE! Songs like "Whip Appeal","Soon As I Get Home" and "Sunshine" are simply amazing! I wore that record out back then...lol...

His 1993 album 'For The Cool In You' is just as impressive.I was CRAZY about the song "Rock Bottom"!! His last two CDs (1996's 'The Day' and 2001's 'Face 2 Face') are decent albums, but they can't compete with his earlier stuff.

As a producer,Babyface pretty much dominated the late 80s' and most of the 90s.Along with partner LA Reid,he created some of the best R&B and pop songs of the last ten years (Toni Braxton's "Breathe Again",Madonna's "Take A Bow",Boyz II Men's "Water Runs Dry").I wish, though, that Face would make an acoustic guitar album.Remember his song "When Can I See You Again" and his collaboration with Eric Clapton on "If I Could Change The World"? That's the direction I'd like to see him move in.Get rid of the trendy R&B production and get back to basics!

Two Occasions
written by Babyface, Dee Bristol, Sid Johnson (1987)

A summer love is beautiful
But it's not enough
To satisfy emotions
That are shared between us
A winter love is cozy
But I need so much more
It just intensifies my wants
To have a love that endures

'Cause every time I close my eyes
I think of you
And no matter what the season nears
I still love you
With all my heart
And I wanna be with you
Wherever you are

I only think of you on two occasions
That's day and night
I'd go for broke if I could be with you
Only you can make it right

An autumn love is special
At this time of the year
But when the leaves are gone
Does that love disappear
I never underestimate the new love of spring
But I'm glad to say in my heart
I know my love's lasting

'Cause every time I close my eyes
I think of you
And no matter what the season nears
I still love you
With all my heart
And I wanna be with you
Wherever you are

I remember hearing that song LONG before it became a big hit in spring 1988.It's from the third Deele album 'Eyes Of A Stranger',which came out in summer '87.My sister bought the album when it first came out (the first single was an uptempo song called "Can You Dance") and she introduced me to the song "Two Ocassions".I KNEW that it would be a smash if they released it as a single!

Do you remember the follow-up single "Shoot Em' Up Movies"?

- Someone To Love
written by Babyface (1995)

Don't even like to think about it
I don't know what I would do without it
I only know I live and breathe for your love
Baby you came to me in my time of need
When I needed you, you were there for me
Baby, the love from you is what got me through
It's because of you I was able to
Give my heart again, you gave me

Someone to love
Someone to touch
Someone to hold
Oh someone to know
Someone to love
Someone to trust
Someone to hold
Oh someone to know

I thought I'd never love again
I thought my life was over and
I didn't want to face nor even see another day
Suddenly from no where, baby you appeared
You dried my tears, you cared for me
Maybe your love for me, truly rescued me
It's becuase of you, I was able to
Fall in love again, you gave me

For so long in my life, I wouldn't let love inside
But I swallowed my pride the day you arrived
Now that you're by my side
Everything is all right
It's because of you, I was able to
Give my heart again, you gave me

Babyface and L.A. Reid worked on Sheena Easton's The Lover In Me. And I love some of the songs they wrote for After 7 (Can't Stop, Heat Of The Moment). I also like TLC's Red Light Special, and other tracks from CrazySexyCool.
Take A Bow is nice too.

Here are some of my favorite Babyface productions (sometimes in collaboartion with LA Reid)...

***"Rock Steady" The Whispers(1987)---If you can't groove to this hot jam, something is wrong with you...lol...

***"Secret Rendezvous" Karyn White(1988)---Y'all remember this catchy jam..."It won't stop,it don't stop,a non-stop Secret Rendezvous"

***"Dial My Heart" The Boys(1988)---Charming song!

***"One Love" Sheena Easton(1988)---If you have the 'Lover In Me' CD,go back and play this song asap! It's the catchiest song on the album!

***"Let It Flow" Toni Braxton (1995)---This was the GEM of the 'Waiting To Exhale' movie soundtrack!

***"Take A Bow" Madonna (1994)---I bet most of you don't know this, but this song is actually Madonna's most successful single (5 weeks at Number One,I think).

***"Heat Of The Moment" After 7(1990)---LA and Face know how to write HOOKS and MELODIES,which is why their songs always sounded so good on the radio. This song is a prime example.Hear it once, and you'll be humming it all day long.

***"Roses Are Red" The Mac Band (1988)---Ditto.

***"I Don't Want To Know" Gladys Knight (1994)---OH LAWD!!! This song is arguably Glady Knight's best solo performance ever! The way she sings these tough, biting lyrics is just incredible ("Why should I care about your feelings, when you don't give a damn about mine?...I Don't Want To Know,it really doesn't matter why you're leaving, you should know you're really throwin' away your life, and I won't sympathize...you hurt me for the last time,I got no tears left to cry,say good-bye"...OUCH!!!)

***"Baby Baby Baby" TLC(1992)---This song kicks ASS!!!

***"Diggin On You"TLC (1994)---I love the line about "I was chillin with my Kool-Aid"...lol...and the part that goes "It's on like that,it's on like that,I gotta be in love or something like that".

***"FairWeather Friend" Johnny Gill(1990)

***"Forbidden Love" Madonna (1994)---Am I the only one who thinks that this song (with background vocals by Babyface) should have been a single?

***"Another Sad Love Song"(1993)---When I first heard this song,I actually got all depressed too...lol...that's the power of a great song with effective lyrics and a kickass vocalist. You end up *FEELING* the song and its message!

***Breathe Again"(1993)---Ditto.

I forgot to mention this song...

"Every Little Step" Bobby Brown (1989)---Now,I'm no fan of Bobby Brown, but this song kicks ass! I read an interview where Babyface said that he was gonna save this song for himself, but Bobby heard it and BEGGED him for it.It's absurdly catchy, and the video was great.

- I'll Always Love You
written by Babyface, L.A. Reid, Daryl Simmons (1993)

I can't imagine living one day without you
I'd rather just lay down and just die
'Cause all I care about is what I mean to you
Sweet baby just knowing you is heaven
I'll always want you in my life

I can't explain, I can't explain the way I feel
You are the rhythm of my heart
And every beat you give is just how I make do
Swear girly nothing else could matter
Just stay here in my heart

And I'll always love you
Deep in my heart
Always love you, always love you
And I'll always love you
Deep in my heart
Always love you, always love you

There's not a feeling in this world that can describe
All of the joy you bring to me
I can't believe you found a way to maximize
All the love you give and do commit
Stay here in my life

HOOK

I can't explain, I can't explain the way I feel
You are the rhythm of my heart
And every beat you give is just how I make do
Swear girly nothing else could matter
Just stay here in my heart
