U had so much success from your other thread about Eddie Van Nalen that u might as well. O.K., I bite. Just for fun. I see the tactic though! But uh, yeah, Page is one of my faves. No doubt. And "Since I've Been Loving You"is one of my fave Zepp tunes. Pagey smokes on the album version and any live version that I've seen or heard.

this is a great performance by Page and Zeppelin...so I say WOW!

But to say he may be the greatest ever is to take it way to far. Do you know the geniouses of Allan Holdsworth, George Benson, Pat Metheny and Bireli Lagrene etc?

No, it is hard to pick the favorite guitarist. So many differing criteria for what makes a guitar player good. People scoff when critics say that Kurt Cobain was a great guitarist--the critics had a point that guitar is not just about technique but an overall sound. Cobain had a unique sound. So does Page. Prince, on the other hand, has no actual sound.

exactly there are many criterias that are required to be called a great guitarist, such as phrasing, unique sound, tone, timing, musicality and technique. This is why Kurt Cobain wasn't a great guitarplayer since he lacked most criterias and was one-dimensional. Technique alone ain't enough to be called great neihter is tone etc

Then why do you think critics laud Cobain? I'm being honest.

One may very well laud Cobain as an artist, songwriter or whatever if that is one's cup of tea. I like some of his work although he never was a favorite, but to say he was a great guitarplayer? Some critics may say it just as some critics think that Sex Pistols were better songwriters than Prince or Stevie Wonder. In sane in my subjective world and probably to most people but there are always exceptions. Kurt Cobain didn't lack feeling but to call him a top notch guitarist is to take it way too far IMO.

I started a thread about great guitarists...check them out, it may be an awakening:

When it comes to Jimmy Page, the feedback I hear the most (from other guitarists, including EVH) is, "great on record, hit-and-miss live". I'm a big admirer of his composing/orchestrating skills, i.e, the way he combined electric and acoustic guitars 'n such.

Now, if only I could mentally erase the image of him on SNL performing with Sean "Puffy" Combs...

I've never really understood Jimmy Page worship. He is above average at best in my opinion. The flurry of notes at the start of that video makes me wince - it's the sound of a man playing just past the limit of his ability, and it always amazes me how he could make a vintage Les Paul through a stack sound thinner than a telecaster through a practice amp. But then I'm a technique freak, and we all want different things in our guitar heroes.

I think the general assessment of his ability as a guitar player is clouded by the enormous success of Led Zep, and how damned cool he looked with that Les Paul.

Which is why you wouldn't like Page much then. shrug And the enormous success of Zep is due to Jimmy Page, since they wouldn't have even existed without Jimmy putting them together and without his production. I think it's safe to say that he doesn't just get accolades over his looks/image.

But I do agree: He did look damn cool with that Les Paul (and all his other guitars as well). razz

Yeah, I've nothing against Led Zep's success, and Page is most definitely behind some real rock classics. Rock classics that I don't really like, but I can appreciate their classic-ness in the eyes of others. I just never understood how he ascended to guitar hero.

It's average noodling to my ears, but far from useless by any stretch of the imagination. I'll give you more detail on my take on it - again I'm not attacking your taste at all, and I thought I'd give my view a little bit of grounding, because it's not a random and unconsidered one. Its a nice composition, but it's not really a stretch to reach that level of playing - he's using basic picking, strumming and a little bit of hybrid picking in there, and there's not really many layers to it. That's taking it purely from one guitar player's point of view, and we all look for different things in our guitarists. I know many people who vomit after 15 seconds of Steve Vai, but I love it, so I know where you're coming from.

Flying a little off topic, John Martyn is an outstanding acoustic guitarist of this period, and if you like that kind of thing that Page is playing, I think you'd really enjoy John Martyn's music.

This clip of John is fantastic - his playing on this is so subtle and multifaceted.http://www.youtube.com/wa..._reEJwIudc

Yes, you're right, I do like that. (link you posted) nod Very much. It was very lovely playing and singing. It's a pity they didn't focus the camera more on his playing, than on his face the whole time though. Although, I didn't see anything that really made me sit up in my chair to be honest. He has a very clear and clean sound, and he seems to play with ease. nod But I'm not a guitarist (well, not a good one by any means that's for sure) though. I just know what I like when I hear it. I did like it though, so thanks for the heads-up.

The quality of the clip (sound and video) of Page on the Julie Felix show is total crap, as you could see, but it's the only one out there that exists. sad It's a bit "noodly", but that's just Page IMO and I don't mind. There's more footage of him playing acoustic out there that I really love, but the majority of YouTube clips of Zeppelin and/or Page are missing now. sigh

Sometimes I do tend to like Page better on acoustic than on electric though.

That always has impressed me though: when someone can play and sing at the same time. Well, play WELL and sing at the same time.

Yeah, musical multitasking is difficult. I find it hard to walk and breathe at the same time, so it rules me out of the singer-songwriter career path lol

Now John Martyn is the man. He's got a great percussive style of playing; I recently saw him live - I can take or leave the stuff he does with the band, but when he does his solo spots... eek He just has IT!

There are some great acoustic clips of John on a recent DVD release entitled "John Martyn At The BBC" - it's a region 0 disc as well.
