Now he's a pathetic alkie who shakes and is basically washed up unless he dregs out another "Van Hagar" laff tour-while Prince has taken the crown and is the picture of health (since you brought up Prince lol).

And Eddie has been playing that same solo the last 15 years of tours yawn

You sound like a frustrated guitarist....EVH is the truth. Rhythm or lead he smokes.

IMHO Eddie is number 2 to Hendrix in the alltime guitar stakes. He and Malsteen were the two most immitated guitar players of the '80's. Consider what the innovations he brought to the game (tapping, inventive whammy bar use, use of harmonics), his own style of guitar (frankenstein strat), his use of the marshall amp (brown sound)and pedals (mxr phaser and flanger), songwriting with Roth-Halen and just PURE NATURAL ABILITY, it may be argued by some that that he IS number one.

Now he's a pathetic alkie who shakes and is basically washed up unless he dregs out another "Van Hagar" laff tour-while Prince has taken the crown and is the picture of health (since you brought up Prince lol).

Prince take Eddie Van halen's crown? eek Never happen, no matter where Eddie personal flaws lead him.
Thank god Prince is churning out great 'stuff' like '3121'. cool (sarcasm alert here!)

Does anyone really need to prove that Eddie was/is a great guitarist? I think it's pretty common knowledge, although I think he's just a tad overrated. As for the comparison to prince, who cares? What is it with guitarist or guitarist fans and constantly trying to rank/rate them against each other? I don't see that with music fans discussing other instruments. All the time I hear shit like "Vai would eat Hendrix alive if he was still around" or "Shawn Lane could kick Holdsworth's ass".

I don't see "Art Tatum could soooo mop the floor with Oscar Peterson" or "Sure he's got technique but I'd like to see Dennis Chambers play with as much feeling as Elvin Jones"....Okay so that sort of thing probably happens, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts it happens way more often among guitar fans.

Eddie Van Halen wasn't just "another fucking two-handed tapper" - dude popularized a whole new way of playing/looking at what a guitar is capable of doing. Some say Steve Hackett was the first, among others - Eddie Van Halen brought it to the forefront. And as far as the "strong enough humbucker" quote, EVH was also the first to popularize the strat/humbucker setup and the locking tremolo (courtesy of Floyd Rose). As someone who posts a lot concerning things guitar-related, I'm a bit surprised/disappointed at your dismissive attitude. The dude's a pioneer responsible for a lot of guitar innovations.

Unless you were just being sarcastic - then, I apologize for my rant. If you were serious, then all I can say is sad

I don't know if Prince did that BEFORE Eddie, I am saying that I HAVE seen Prince do a longer than five minute guitar solo before! April 1993, in fact. RAdio City Music Hall. She's Always In My Hair. Look it up. Reading comprehension, people, this is elementary school level stuff, here...

What is this, high school? Can we get back to some intelligent conversation here, instead of yes he can, no he can't? Are there a punch of pre-teens up here trying to post MULTIPLE TIMES? I think it's obvious (to most) that the thread is celebrating EVH's contribution to guitar playing. Prince may do "five minute guitar solos" - cool, you saw him do it live - even cooler. I don't think the creator of this thread was talking about that at all. Again, he was talking about EVH's unique playing style - there are things that Eddie Van Halen does that Prince does not do - they're simply not part of his style. They are both great players. Eddie Van Halen redefined guitar playing. Prince is Prince. Let's leave it at that. Sheesh confused
