11/24/91 Freddie Mercury 15 years gone Can it really be that long already? I was looked through possibly the greatest Queen retrospective release which was "Champions of the world" a 2+ hr Video that came out around the time of the UNDERRATED "Made in Heaven" record, to my knowledge this retrospective hasnt been available on DVD, so i had to dig out the Video, i remember watching it religiously back in 1995 when it came out. One thing that i do remember was right after Freddie Mercury died, Magic Johnson who had tested HIV positive that year was on the "Arsenio" show and Arsenio said what do you think about the way Freddie handled it, Magic Johnson said that Freddie should have come out earlier about it and become more of an advocate. To this day i get uspet when i think of that stupid statement and question, Magic forgets that the attitude back then towards gays was quite different, at the time Freddie had to hide and protect everyone around him, where as Magic's way of contracting Aids was just sleeping with too many women, big difference in Macho-amercia.
On a musical note, if you havent heard "Made in Heaven" you really should, this is not an album that was just pieced together of things that didnt make previous albums, Freddie knew this was it, actually he didnt expect to live past 1989's "The Miracle", the track "Was it all Worth it" from that album was supposed to be their finale. But Freddi was still strong at that point and then began "Innuendo", and at that point Freddie told the band this is what he had, and he wanted to record as much as possible for them to go on with. It is amazing that vocally Freddie still had it till the end, the chilling thing to this day is the track "MOTHER LOVE" from Made in Heaven, the very last verse of that song is sung by Brian May because Freddie had died before its completition, this track is amazing for its rewind of Freddies life at the end of it. I remember watching a documentary on Freddie which was a biography until the last of his days.
I have the Made In Heaven cd. Freddie sung what he could for the album when he was not weak, being frail and very ill with aids. Miss ya Freddie Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! Miss ya Freddie Yeah i remember days after he died, here in the states People magazine got hold of a picture from London of Freddie about a month before his death of him walking by his front door, i didnt want to see the pic and refused to look at it, because i just felt it was in poor taste and also how the press camped in front of his home though he didnt say he was ill, the british press knew he was not well and seeing different doctors. He was the best man! My favorite male singer. I think Rock N' Roll is completely different without him. There's going to be a movie about his life btw. I posted the news last week I think. | |
