They're totally different, and probably fans of each other.

They each do things the other doesn't, and they each deserve huge respect. Prince can't touch Eddie's technique on guitar, but Eddie's not the all around musician Prince is.

Its not a fan thing either because I listen to Prince much more than Van Halen. Its a GUITAR thing. "Eruption" was straight legato and bends. No tapping. That was Eddie BEFORE he started taking tapping to its greatest level. He was already a badass before he was an innovator. Other guitar players that know their instrument and some history on its players know who the innovators are and who the proficient players are because they know what it takes to get there and are usually 'en route'. EVH spawned a whole generation of guitarists and raised the bar a mile high and made players step up their game. Guitarists respect that.
Prince is a good player. Not a GREAT player but he's good without question. He too influenced a generation of multi-instrumentalists. They have both contributed much to music. Eddie is still the man on guitar, though.

Eddie is a great guitarist. He ranks up there with the absolute best. I would love to see him get his act together and perform again. He sure knows how to make his guitar sing!

The first night of the Bay Area leg of the last VH reunion tour in San Jose, Eddie was hammered and played like shit. At one point he started crying on stage. Granted it did seem like his hip was bothering him, but he still stunk.

The next night in Oakland he was sober and played much better.

Both are great guitar players with different styles and capabilities, but when Eddie is hammered and playing that badly, he is not even in the same league as Prince.

But when both are at the top of their game two of the best.

You go can still go in any Guitar Center and find some teen sitting in front of a Line 6 amp (with the insane distortion on) doing the "Eruption" tapping part.

I hate when people like Eddie are dismissed because of tapping. Shit, piano is just tapping, too, and so is drumming.

As was said before, it's usually non-musicians who are so dismissive.
