I'm stunned to hear the news. Gerald Levert was an act whose music with which I grew up. A great singer who consistently had a strong presence in soul music for two decades. It's strange to think of him being dead, especially at this stage of his life.

I just find it so hard to believe that people just blindly assume that the guy died due to his weight. If he were thin, y'all just be sitting there scratchin' your heads, huh? Amazing.

I am not going to say anything about his weight and stuff.

I am only going to think about the good and beautiful music that he left us supporters to enjoy while we are still here. He happened to be one of my favorite R&B singers of all time. I made a mp3 collection of his songs along with when he did with Levert as a group and LSG too.

RIP Gerald Levert

If anything, by the start of the decade Gerald Levert was TOO prolific when it came to releasing new product. It was hard to tell what single came from what album, because he released an album every year from 2000 through 2005. It made his sound come across as even more calculated -- and that's not even counting his duet album with his father Eddie in 1995 and the two LSG albums in 1996 and the one released few years ago.

Not only was Gerald Levert a great singer, he was a prolific songwriter and more than capable producer. I never realized how much of a fan I was of his until his passing, and I looked into my music collection and saw how many of his albums I bought (solo, with Levert and with LSG). I'm also burning some CDs of his music, in memory of his talent.

I looked on Itunes, they don't even have the Levert "Hits" collection on there.

I need to pick this up.

Does anyone remember his singing on Chris Rock's "No Sex in the Champagne Room?" It was hilarious! Gerald's voice was just what the song needed. He was very funy in the video as well.

What a talented man.

This was in my local paper today, the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Gerald apparently had heart disease: sad

Monday, November 13, 2006

Friday memorial planned for Gerald Levert

By John Soeder
Plain Dealer Pop Music Critic

A public memorial service for Gerald Levert is being planned for Friday at Music Hall in Cleveland. Details have not been finalized.

The R&B singer was pronounced dead last Friday afternoon, after a relative found Levert unresponsive at his home in Newbury Township. He was 40. Preliminary autopsy results indicated he had mild to moderate heart disease.

Reached by phone Tuesday, his father, Eddie Levert of the O'Jays, was too upset to speak at length.

"If you want to say something to your readers, just tell them I love my son very much," Eddie Levert said. "I'm gonna really miss him. That's it."

Gerald Levert and his dad collaborated on the 1995 album "Father & Son." They often performed together, too.

Levert first found fame with the trio LeVert, whose single "Casanova" was a Top 5 hit in 1987. He went on to a successful career as a solo artist and as a member of the supergroup LSG with Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill.

In lieu of flowers, the Levert family suggests contributions to the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Checks (payable to the Rhythm and Blues Foundation) and condolences may be sent to Andy Gibson, Trevel Productions Inc., 13816 Cedar Road, University Heights, OH 44118.

No one here is disputing the effects of a lack of a healthly lifestyle -- especially among black males, who tend to have higher risk levels than most other groups in the United States.

The problem is that you're turning a tribute thread dedicated to a popular and well-respected recording artist into a public service announcement that has become too distracting to the topic. Instead of reasoning with you, maybe you should be reported to the moderators.

I just so happen' to catch some of a local radio show here in Dallas, with Millie Jackson who broadcasts remote from her Atlanta home. Millie had Eric Grant singer with the O'Jays on. From what psychodelicide has posted about Eddie Levert taking Gerald’s death very hard, Eric Grant also said the same on Millie's radio show. Eddie isn't taking it well at all, which is expected. Eric said that Eddie at times think he has control and then he just loses it. Eric was saying something about a conversation Eddie and Gerald had last week on a Plane. Eddie was telling Gerald in the case of his death (Eddies), what plains he wanted for his services etc. Gerald stated if he were to pass he didn't want people to see and remember him that way but to remember him in the way that he was... mind you this is second to third hand, from what I heard over the radio. When I was reading psychodelicide post I remembered Millie's interview today with Eric Grant.

Eddie and Gerald’s conversation on the Plane last week is like "Wow". sad

WONDER, GILL, STONE TO SING FOR LEVERT: Musical tribute set for Friday in Cleveland; preliminary autopsy results announced.
WONDER, GILL, STONE TO SING FOR LEVERT: Musical tribute set for Friday in Cleveland; preliminary autopsy results announced.
Date: Wednesday, November 15, 2006
By: EURWeb.com & BlackAmericaWeb.com

Stevie Wonder, Johnny Gill and Angie Stone are among the artists scheduled to perform at a musical tribute organized for Gerald Levert, who died of a heart attack Friday at the age of 40.

The memorial, titled Celebration of Life, was organized by the late singer’s family and will take place in Levert’s Cleveland hometown at 12 p.m. Friday (Nov. 17) at the Cleveland Music Hall.

Also scheduled to perform is Gerald's younger brother Sean, who sang with him as a member of the R&B trio LeVert.

Fans attending the ceremony will be admitted on a first come, first served basis, reports Billboard. Donations in Levert's name can be made to the R&B Foundation.

Meanwhile, preliminary autopsy results reveal that mild to moderate heart disease may have caused the singer's heart attack, but a final determination may not be available up to eight weeks, according to Billboard.

At the time of his death, Levert had completed a new album that was due to be released in February. He also finished work on his first book, "I Got Your Back," which he co-wrote with his father Eddie Levert, Sr., and author Lyah LeFlore.

The book includes family and musical memories shared by both father and son.
