Jam Of The Day: "Which Way Is Up" by Stargard

This is a jam that I don't have yet but am looking for. It is funky as hell. I did a thread a few months ago asking what the name of a particular Pointer Sisters song was that sounded like it came out in the disco era. As it turns out, it wasn't the Pointer Sisters at all, it was Stargard. These girls sound like the Pointer Sisters but the music sounds like the Brothers Johnson.

Anybody into this one?

I got into the tune because it was part of what I consider...

...Richard Pryor's funniest movie.

The fact that Norman Whitfield had a little something to do with the tune didn't hurt either. smile

I heard the song for the very first time a few months ago. I didn't know it was from a movie. Now I know where to start looking to find it...on the soundtrack. smile

confuse That might be next to impossible. I don't think i've ever seen one.

Unless you're willing to pay an import price for the 45...

...this might be the way to roll.

Or you could just download that single tune from iTunes/Yahoo/Rhapsody. wink

That was the jam. I think the Pointer Sisters song that you are reminded of is Believe In Something, the song they sang in Car Wash. Somehwat similar imo.

I have this song on a few compilations, including this one:

Shake It Well by the Dramatics
The Pinocchio Theory by Bootsy's Rubber Band
Holy Ghost by the Bar Kays
***Which Way Is Up by Stargard***
Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is by Rose Royce
Bounce,Rock,Skate,Roll by Vaughan Mason and Crew
Flashlight by Parliament
Street Life by the Crusaders
Disco Nights (Rock Freak) by GQ
Firecracker by Mass Production
Dance With Me by Rufus

A somewhat odd compilation. Most of those songs aren't "disco" at all lol

I did an internet search and came up with that CD. I read the tracklist and I have damn near everything else on it already. However, I have seen that CD in stores so I will probably end up getting it. It won't be the first time I've bought compilations duplicating songs I already have just to get one song I don't have. lol

Very similar. "Believe Something" is the reason I thought "Which Way Is Up" was The Pointer Sisters. I heard it once on the radio and couldn't remember the name of the song. I checked a Pointer Sisters compilation I already had to see if I had skipped over the song, then I bought two more Pointer Sisters compilations hoping it was on there.

I've got all those songs already except for "Street Life". I would probably get that particular compilation instead of "Disco Gold" but I haven't seen it in stores. I know what's in these stores in my area because the compilation section is usually the first place I head to, to find rare jams. The albums by the artists are usually out of print. lol

Another great jam by Stargard is Star Boppin. I first heard the DJ in a Los Angeles Record Store (old VIP Records on Crenshaw) in the 1970s and thought it had to be a P-Funk record. Turned out it was Stargard. Which Way Is Up is cool, but a little disco-y for me. Star Boppin is slamming. Anyone familiar with it?
