his problem that in his heyday, most of his songs sounded the same. his own and the ones he gave to other artists. it was a signature sound though, and extremely popular at the time. when you deluge the mid-90's with a bunch of stuff that sounds the same and you put something out 10 years later without changing it up very much, people are going to think it's dull and boring and sounds dated, even if it's your own sound you're repeating, because the same sound 10 years later IS dull, boring, and dated whether it was in the first place or not.
I agree with you too. This is why acoustic is a good way to go. The Babyface "sound" is a production thing. Underneath that he's also a good songwriter. This is what going acoustic would reveal.

Agreed. He needs to do an acoustic soul album.Strip the music down and bare his soul.At his age,he needs to make music that is more "adult",instead of trying to appeal to the younger crowd (his 'Face 2 Face' album included collaborations with The Neptunes and Snoop Dogg!!).He's always been a terrific songwriter and I know he can come up with a stunning, mature album.

He didn't gain his touch, to begin with.

I think the brotha is just overrated. His stuff is too "plastic" for my taste, I need to hear a lil' something organic in what you do.

Remember Malik Pendelton(sp?)? He should've been a massive producer. He could deliever some organic musicianship,,,,he got some Jazz, deep upright bass in his shit too which I like nod

so your saying you dont like any of toni braxton's old songs from the 90's, or Bobby browns album dont be cruel, or even Anita baker's songs from the early 90's and even TLC songs...

baby face made some GREAT songs... maybe he didnt make great music for himself... but during the 90s when he made those songs they were very nice

Thats right, I don't. I love Toni's work with her husband Keri Lewis from The Heat and some of the stuff she did with her ex-boyfriend, Bryce Wilson or whats his name, I love Anita's pre-90's stuff more(esp the ones with George Duke) and I dig TLC's work with Dallas Austin which I think he's more unpredictable,,,other than that, nah!

baby face made some GREAT songs... maybe he didnt make great music for himself... but during the 90s when he made those songs they were very nice

Waiting For Exhale was his worthiest moment,,,,the rest belong to the garbage IMHO.

I agree,Babyface has definitely "lost" something. His productions these days sound stale and boring. He used to write truly amazing songs, for himself and for other artists:

"Another Sad Love Song" by Toni Braxton
"Water Runs Dry" by Boyz 2 Men
"Take a Bow" by Madonna
"I'm Ready" by Tevin Campbell
"I Don't Want To Know" by Gladys Knight

but at some point in the late 90s,things went sour.I remember being extremely disappointed with his 1996 CD 'The Day'....it was bland and uninspired, with that horrible Shalamar cover song. His last truly great solo album was 'For The Cool In You'.I think he needs to pick up his guitar and try some acoustic soul music (remember his excellent 1993 single "When Will I See You Again"?).He's still very talented.

The thing is, I liked that CD. I loved songs like, 7 seas and All day thinkin. It just seems to me that he wanted to make more money. To do this, he decided to write songs that sounded like everyone elses. That "Grown & Sexy", CD was trash....Remember "Face To Face"? The only good cut from that one was, "What if"....I just want to know, what gives?

I agree that the day cd was bland. He was on some stevie wonder conversation
peace trip then but he came back strong with one of my favorite face cds face
to face. He bought a lot of uptempo heat on this cd instead of typical drab ballads like on the day. I loved this cd. Outside inside out, you can't front
on that there she goes joint even though it was produced by the neptunes that
joint was hot. Stress out, work it out, baby's mama, and don't take it personal
along with sweet ballads like what if, i keep callin, and wish u was my girl.
He took a chance and did something different on this cd. I would rank it as
my favorite with for the cool in you next. I have only heard 2 or 3 singles from his cd of 2005 so and they were good so i cannot comment on it. As far as
whether face is finished or not, we know the cat is still talented. I would pay
to see him perform as long as ticket prices were reasonable. Just thing of the
fickle ass music industry today. Would you rather see face live or these manufactured non performing cats of today like donnell jones, lyfe jennings,
jaheim,genuine,etc.

that "grown & sexy" cd was shitty....nothing he puts out now will ever compare to "i only think of you on two occasions" music

Two occasions. Ick. Double Ick. The song was too whiney and sugary. The video with the hairstyles. Ha Ha. The song paved the way for L.A and face production factory but that song was the deele's weakest by far. Even shoot em up movies was a better song than that. In fact shoot em up movies and can you dance were
my favorite songs from that deele album. The first deele album was the shiznit with body talk, just my luck, and i surrender. The second album was cool too. Material thangz and sweet november.

Babyface can go somewhere with that mess!

See, he is singing from an "old school" perspective. Back in the day, that's what the music was all about, doing things to show that u you and want to keep her.Unlike today's music, which is all about "licking you up and down" and "f@#cking you tonight", there is nothing wrong with showing what u would do for your mate;just as long as she or he has your back. Which would u rather, someone who was only good in bed or someone that had your back?
[Edited 11/9/06 14:12pm]
I agree with you shorttrini, But Dang! Could'nt Babyface have put some lyrics in that song stating that that kind of treatment comes with conditions? I mean instead of singing "As Soon As I Get Home From Work" Couldn't he have sung "As Long As You Treat Me Right" or something like that?

Oh Lord, I remember that damn song and I HATED it almost as much as the SEVERELY overplayed "Whip Appeal".

They used to play "Whip Appeal" so much that I could recognize it from the very first musical note when it came on the radio. Apparently, other people could too because a good friend of mine was riding with me in my car who loves that song. I heard that first note and switched the station quick before she could notice. Hell, she noticed and hollered...."Hey, that's Whip Appeal, turn that back!". Then she sang along with the damn song. Afterwards, they played another one I hate...."Superwoman" by Karyn White and she sang LOUDLY. If they had played a Whitney Houston song afterwards, I think I would have run the damn car into a tree and ended it all. lol

Granted, I'm gulity as charge for being an old fan of 'Face's Tender Lover album.

With that said, I miss The Deele a lot more. Body Talk & I Surrender are synthfunk classics!
biggrin

The Deele had some jams....

Body Talk
Material Thanz
Can U Dance
Hip Chic

Babyface solo, was the total opposite of hard shit like that. He was kinda like a male version of Shitney Houston....weak, weak, weak.

That's the edited version. Most people haven't heard the unedited version with a guest rap from OJ.

"I'll whip dat a**. I'll slit your neck....."

I mean lets face it, if a fella is paying the rent and doing the dishes there is some deeper Iceberg Slim stuff involved too.

The record company just wanted it toned down a little.

No. But you will need to show me a list of songs (The Catch: no slow jams! That's too easy. I want dance cuts!).

None of these qualify as ballads:

Girlfriend
Giving You the Benefit
Tender Lover
On Our Own
I'm Your Baby Tonight
Dial My Heart
Exclusivity
Fairweather Friend
Can We Talk
It's No Crime
You're Makin' Me High
Sittin' Up in My Room
Every Little Step
My Kinda Girl
Heat of the Moment
Backyard
The Way You Love Me
Humpin' Around
For the Cool in You
Whatever
Give U My Heart
Queen of the Night
Gotta Learn My Rhythm
Rock Steady
Roses Are Red
Diggin' on You
Secret Rendezvous
You Said, You Said
Boys & Girls
Rock Bottom
I Wanna Love Like That
You Thought Wrong
Knocked Out
Most Girls
My Name Is Not Susan
Anymore

I can't think of any bad examples of his recent work...It's just not as memorable, that's for sure. Could have something to do with R&B being all about crunk now of days. A song like "Thinkin About My Ex" is very nice and could've been a hit...only problem is few songs like that make the cut anymore.

Babyface has been around writing songs like forever. I don't think that he has lost his touch. I think that his audience may get tired of his sound on pop radio due to hearing his songs a lot. He is a great songwriter.

I remember Prince used to change up his styles. I remember "Sign O The Times" and "Lovesexy" those albums were soooo different. I liked them both.

I kind of wish that Prince went to basic piano, acoustic guitar, trap drum set, microphone, amp and record on analog tape a full album with just that. No jazzy
type stuff. Nothing really rock. Just something that can hold. Simple songs.
I may not like the man.
I may not like his music after the mid 90s.

I respect his current artistry...I just don't like him.

No hate.
