Emma Bunton :: Downtown (2006) [Petula Clark cover]

::: POCKETROCK

Emma :: Downtown (2006)

Cover: via Amazon

My favorite Spice since '05, Emma Bunton, is back with "Life In Mono," a follow-up to the 2004/5 (depending which side of the Atlantic you're on) LP "Free Me." Her newest picks up where her last '60s splashed project left off, in the sense of it being an unabashed celebration of the sound and style of Burt Bacharach and early Motown-esque pop. "Life In Mono" is Emma on a roll and lost in her own groove. She's not following electro, urban or any of-the-moment trend, she's doing her own thing and I applaud her for that. Much like Xtina's whole "Back To Basics" trip.

Mono's lead single -- which hits shelves internationally December 4 (US release uncertain) -- is "Downtown," a cover of Petula Clark's 1964 pop music masterpiece. The classic ode to leaving one's troubles behind has now been dressed up as a charity fundraising number. Now, I appreciate Emma for putting a modern spin on a beloved classic, but "Downtown" is one of the greatest pop songs ever recorded in the history of mankind. And they're pretty big heels to fill. She does a good job of harmonizing and the vocal moments after the bridge are rather keen, but in no way does she eclipse the timelessness of Clark's. Not to say I don't love Emma and am not rooting for this upcoming album, so I'll just take this cover for what it's worth and view it as homage to her myriad of influences.

The video has been pocketrock'd along with some mixes.

I love the Spice Girls...I'm interested to hear Baby Spice...uh, I mean, Emma Bunton's album.
That picture bugs me though. Her body looks great, but facially she looks Exorcist-ic. Bad angle! confused

DId you check out her last album "Free Me"? I thought that was one of the best solo Spice LPs to come out in quite a while. Drenched in classic pop.

I never minded Emma Bunton because her voice is subtle as a breeze.

Melanie C would be my favorite solo of the bunch though, Northern Star was such a quality project.
