Fishbone - Worth getting into? Only heard a few songs by them but they're pretty damn impressive. They sound like Mike Patton's long lost black step-brother.
Who's clued up on them? How good are they, and what is the album(s) to get for a newbie?

First 2 albums are classics, definitely worth getting.

...
A Great band that never got Mainstream props, yet they've influenced everyone from The Red Hot Chili Peppers to No Doubt, and they rocked long before Living Colour and 24-7 Spyz, yet IMO, they were more energetic and versatile than all of these bands put together...a manic blend of Funk/Punk/Ska/Rock/Reggae.... ...and I agree with diamondpearl1, 'The Essential Fishbone' is probably a good starting place! .... How available are their albums? I've just had a look around - Amazon, Play, etc. - and it seems all their main albums (Truth & Soul, The Reality Of My Surroundings) are out of print! What's the deal with that?

That's odd; I see 'em around all the time... I know they got dropped from Columbia years ago, but I don't know why they would delete the albums. But I bet Amazon has tons of copies through 'used CD' sellers, though.... btw, For what it's worth, I think 'Truth and Soul' and 'Reality Of My Surroundings' represent Fishbone at their peak.... ... I'd say get the very first one and just stop there. Truth and Soul has some good stuff I guess, but the first one really rocked.
Later records had a funk-metal thing that I just couldn't stand, tho I really don't know what they're like these days.

YES!!! Fishbone is definitely worth getting into. My favorite album is Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe.
They've got some great songs on other albums as well. "Pouring Rain" from Truth & Soul is one of my favorite Fishbone songs. Check around for that one. Happy fishing or should I say boning? perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

A better collection than Essential, if you can find it I think is Fishbone 101: Nuttasaurusmeg Fossil Fuelin'. It has all but one of the tracks on Essential, plus alternate takes and more on the 2nd of its two discs. "Slick Nick, You Devil You" should be on everyone's Christmas song playlist.

[Edited 11/7/06 11:21am] I've gotta co-sign on this one. I'd also concur that Truth and Soul and The Reality of My Surroundings should not be passed up in favor of a compilation.

Oh and fans of Sly & the family stone shouldn't pass up Reality of My Surroundings because it contains one of the best homages to them ever made "Everyday Sunshine"
