Ciara - from female Michael to female Prince?

I just saw the Promise video. Yes, I know that I am late. I saw a thread discussing the video and how hot Ciara is, but no one mentioned the OBVIOUS (at least to me) Prince influence on this song.

The track, her vocal delivery and even the "you could be my Prince" line tell me that this girl has moved from her MJ collection to her Prince collection in search of inspiration.

Even the mic scene reminds me of the Scandalous video. Am I the only one who thought of Prince when I heard this song/saw this video?

Doubt it. She still thinks Michael Jackson's the greatest thing that's ever walked.

Ciara said herself that the song is inspired by Prince. She also said other songs on the album are inspired by MJ and Madonna.

i think that's because prince hasn't been bringing us the goods that we all crave so we look out for copy cats and sound alikes. that's what it's come down to.

WHEN. Proof please. Even if she said it, it doesn't really matter because she didn't produce the track.
This track sounds just like something Jimmy & Terry would have done for Janet. Keep in mind, the MLPS sound is a combination of people, not just Prince. This doesn't sound like any of Prince's songs and outside of the use of the Linn Drum (which tends to drive most to immediately relate a song to Prince), it pretty much sounds like something Janet would have done.

If Jimmy and Terry produced it than its def a moneyapoliis production, which is what they always do... it probably sounds like THE TIME, from 23 years ago, but not prince
the track it sounds nothing like prince...
people hear a linn drumm and automatically say prince influence,

I DO NOT think that every soft ballad sounds like Prince, nor am I on Prince's "nuts." In this case, I hear a Prince inspiration, which has nothing to do with the damn linn drum.

If you disagree, disagree, but do not lump me in with people who think every song is Prince inspired, because I do not! That could not be further from the truth.

Also, Prince has been delivering the goods for me, so I am not craving his sound from anyone but him. However, if something reminds me of him, I note it.

And you need to stop drinking the same Kool-Aid that all of those other Prince-haters be drinking...you know, the ones that love to stay blind to fact that Ciara did borrow a little of Prince's Damn U for her song/video, Promise.

BTW, I like Ciara and I will check out all of her albums. At least she doesn't fake the MPLS influences like Justin Timberlake. That my opinion. Get over it! Thread Over.

BK, you're right.

When I see/hear the MPLS sound, Prince isn't all by himself all the time.

THINK: The Revolution & the instruments on stage --

2 keyboard synths (covering all piano, organ, strings, horns, synth leads/basses/pads)

1 electronic drum kits (or a drum machine like a Linn Drumm, Roland TR-808/909/707, whatever...)

1 bass

2 guitars

There, that's it. We have the formula for the MPLS sounds! Now can we let this thread die yet?!?

biggrin

As always, the usual suspects have to make sure that they get their Prince dig in and let everyone know that Prince ain't all that...you know...since they're much more objective than the so-called "fams". rolleyes

Anywho, it's not only Prince "fams" that are saying that "Promise" sounds very Princey. It's also being said by non-fans and casual fans of P. My 13 year old daughter asked me if it was a Prince cover...and she can't stand Prince.

Well, I honestly think that "Promise" sounds much more like it would be in the family of Janet's "Love Scene/Ooh Baby" than "When 2 R In Love" or "Damn You". Rhythmically, I understand how Computer Blue would come to mind but that is SOLELY BECAUSE OF THE PLACEMENT OF THE LINN DRUM in the rhythm track. Other than that, the vocal arrangements, lyrical style (how she playfully presents herself submissively and even the little talking parts that are kind of whispery)...thats all very JANET. The padded synths - Janet. you can hear that on songs like "Warmth". I understand the indirect Prince influence but the DIRECT Janet influence just can't be ignored; certainly not by anyone who knows Janet's material as well as Prince's.

lowkey

prince diehard fans hear him in everything, i dont think this song sounds anything like a prince song.ciarra is a 2006 version of janet and aaliyah.i dont really like the song, she seems to be trying to hard.i like ciarra but she needs to work on her stage presence and her stamina, she gets winded really fast even lip syncing.
