Christina Aguilera: SHUT THE HELL UP!

I would rather hear a yak mating than hear her OVERSINGING one more time! Okay Christina, we know you can hold a note so PLEASE, SHUT UP NOW AND SING NORMALLY!

She's young so I think it can be forgiven. How many young guitar players play with both hands, their feet, their dick and anything else they can find, only to mature and start to playing more tastefully? I think (I hope!) that Christina will do the same once she's a little older. She's definitely got pipes, which is more than you can say for a lot of singers these days.

I have a problem with "oversinging" in general! mad

Proving how great your voice is, is fine.

But just howling at the moon for an extended 5 minutes (ala Beyonce -Dangerously in Love!!!)
is just plain old irritating. When the song is done, its DONE!
If you will, so will I

And the thing is some of the beats on her latest are pretty cool but she won't shut up long enough to let us enjoy them.
Imagine Prince screaming/cooing/gurgling through every single measure of 1999. Ghastly. Let us get down a bit. Damn.

I agree.Christina has a great voice, but she does tend to oversing. She has skills, she just needs to turn it down a couple of notches.

righ on dude!! These two are the queens of oversining. Don't get me wrong, I highly respect both women, but sometimes their oversinging turns me off.

That's the problem I have with Joss Stone. She does have a nice voice, but the oversinging just kills EVERY song of hers for me. It's like, "Sit down and shut the fuck up!" confused

exactly for some reasons male singers never over sing,
yet they still show case their vocal abilities, Prince does have to sustain a note for a min, but his voice can span 3 to 4 ocataves in one song
he'll go extremely low than extremely high,
Christina has a strong voice and can sustain a note, but she doesn't leave her octave range

This thread is so lame. She doesn't sing like that on every song. & she's refrained a lot from when she first came out. If you don't like that type of singing then you obviously need to stop complaining and listen to someone else.

I agree.I like Christina Aguilera, but I think she "over sings" on many of her songs.Real singers should know that there's no need to show off every note in a four minute song.Show a little restraint.Sometimes,it sounds like she is doing more yelling than singing, lol.

I'm so sick of stupid threads like this,a singer is supposed to use their voice as an instrument.
They're supposed to make you feel something, show emotion, and move you to tears.
It is those so-called oversinging moments when I am MOVED!
Don't believe me,listen to Stevie Wonder,Chaka Khan,Teena Marie,Luther Vandross,or Nikka Costa.
Matter of fact, listen to Nikka's Push & Pull, the majority of the song is actually pretty boring until near the end when she goes off-you people would call it oversinging-but that's the moment when I start to shed some tears, and if a vocalist can't make you cry, what's the fucking point?
Would you call the second half of Stevies'Living For The City oversinging?
Instrumentalists are allowed to solo for an eternity, but when a singer shows her skills, its always a problem.

Christina is not the only one guilty of it, even veteran singers that should know better are doing it nowdays too, it drives me nuts.

They embellish every note to the point where it just kills the song and makes it unlistenable.

That's just it, she pulled out all the stops at the END. If she did that throughout the entire song, it would not have been such a special moment. As a singer, you don't want to empty your bag of tricks in the first few measures. You want to keep people waiting, then knock their socks off with an amazing ending. Same goes for instrumental solos. You've got to let it build.

Oversinging is not a problem here IMO, I'll take Chaka, Aretha and Patti anyday in a breath over Xtina or Beyonce...why?

Becoz when I hear Chaka/Aretha/Patti wail, it ain't just for the sake of it, its becoz you know they are trying to get their point across. You can actualy feel them, whereas Xtina/Beyonce are just trying to show off. Its a fluff and corn when it comes to some of these modern day wailers.

Maybe ReRe, CK and Patti wail too much for some people's taste, but at least you can tell that they're natural and spontaneous about it.

Xtina and Bey on the other hand, are pretty calculated.

Ditto. The thing is, even when Chaka, and Patti, and Aretha were around the ages that people like Christina are now, their voices just sounded more mature. Christina's voice just sounds thin and weak to me for some reason. Beyonce's not as bad, but she still sounds kinda childish IMO.

The reason why I can't be mad at Chaka, Aretha or Patti(who got the wailing scene in lock recently lol) is becoz they don't bring the hair, the gown, the make-up and the whole glamorous shebang into the stage or even their music.

They're not afraid of looking ugly and pee on themselves(like Aretha put it) when they get tense, ya know? Chaka will go out and wail her wild hair outta everybody like she got through finishing a fight, you know its personal. Patti LaBelle will roll on the stage's floor and catch the holy spirit like she's in some congregation, you know its personal. Aretha will snatch up her wig and sang every word in the English language even its a Banana pudding jingles(here FAVE btw) and make you feel every damn thing that comes outta her greasy damn self, you know its personal.

While Mary J Blige is not a true wailer, she somewhat got the same human quality in her craft, in a sense IMHO.

Whatever. This just entails to the style that you like to hear. & I don't think that people can say that Christina doesn't know how to sing properly when she delivers examples of it like Save Me From Myself. I don't hear Beyonce or Kelly Clarkson doing that. & one thing about Christina, her tone is her shining point. It's versatile so she can sing basically any style of music she wants. So the way she sings now may be more suited w/ one genre over another. For example, when she covered Free's Alright Now she killed. Ya'll don't like screaming fine. I'll keep listening to people like Christina and Axl Rose. Scream on cuz I like it. Atleast they have the ability to scream and they don't whine like Timberlake. Yeah sometimes she's annoying but when she get's it right she's on point. I'd rather listen to let's say Without You than any of Clarkson or Beyonce's songs. & this is all subjective because a lot of people who get on Christina for it praise Mariah and Beyonce. Mariah does those incessant melismas. They're repulsive. Beyonce's DIL was like a 20 minute performance. But most people put the focus on Christina.

Bingo!

I've been listening to Push and Pull constantly all week and what I appreciate the most about the song is the build up. It's a cool, mellow song in the beginning and then Nikka takes it home at the END. I love it. She didn't start off with note 1 wailing, screeching and screaming like Beyonce and Christina. That's one of the reasons that makes Bday unbearable. Beyonce screams throughout the entire album.

Most of today's kids got no identity, that's their problem.

They don't know what they want, once they are pop and the next you know they're turning into rock 'cause it's "cool", then they try to go old school to prove something and when it flops they go rnb 'cause it's "hip", they just don't know what the heck they're doing

oh baloney. Aretha looks like a baked potato wrapped in foil half the time, Chaka can't go anywhere without a cape, or whatever the hell it is, and Patti had records stapled to her ass at the Democratic National Convention for christ's sake biggrin
