it would have to be his cover of 'leavin on a jet plane' because i thought that was real pretty when i heard all those years ago... i've never been fortunate enough to hear him in concert though. if i can get tix, you wanna go?

Engelbert rocks, eh? He is good. I think most people lump him or mix him up with Wayne Newton. He is voiced like a Sinatra in my book. "when Im in those arms of yours I'm so gone"-With U/Janet

He is voiced like a Sinatra in my book. when i was little i used to listen to my paretns' albums and so i grew up listening to things like "carnival in koln" herb alpert and the tijuana brass, etc. i liked engelbert then and i do still, even though it's pretty weird to speak his name in public

no. this is a very sincere, convincing thread appreciating a man who has not had an easy road in life. a man whose parents - bless them i'm sure - but whose parents were, perhaps rowing with only one oar. or, intoxicated on strong spirits at the time of christening. we can only wonder what they were thinking, the moment the two of them fixed on "engelbert" as his monicker. was it a family name? perhaps we'll never know. and the way mr. humperdinck, or shall we say engelbert carries it off! with charm and grace, true dignity! his name is like barbra streisand's nose. complicated and fairly high-profile, a badge of individual character which they both wear quite well. she, on the one hand could have gone the easy route and had cosmetic surgery to reduce her nose to a less noticeable shape. yet she has chosen not to. naturally as a musician her voice being tied into her sinus cavities surgery would affect her voice and, but i digress. so anyway. like barbra, engelbert could have changed his name when he came of age, but he chose not to. He could have been "John Hancock" or something equally smooth like that but instead of changing he stuck with what his parents gave him. that mindset, that honest "i am who i am" seems kind of opposite to current hollywood mentality, when you think of it, and it likely takes a great deal of sheer grit. so no, this thread is no joke, it is quite real. i just think the ORG should take a moment out of its busy day to appreciate a true musician and a very brave man.
