Marvin had a better arrangement on his, Gladys and the Pips's version was more funky, but because of pure emotion, Marvin is my favorite, it sounds like a war song when he sings it.

Aah, I had a thread about this a looong time ago
Anyway, Roger's version is my favorite. [Edited 11/6/06 14:16pm] It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Did Gladys really do it first? I know her version was released first, but I think Whitfield let Marvin record it first. Anyway, all 3 versions discussed in this thread are great, but for me: 1. Marvin 2. Gladys 3. Roger Can't nobody sang like Marvin Gaye... not even Eddie Kane, Jr.! "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Did Gladys really do it first? yeah, that's pretty much as I heard it. the Isely Brothers did it before all of them, but it was never officially released and should be in the archives of Motown Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

I agree.I like his version the best.

I love 'em both - Gladys and the Pips had the church vibe goin' on - it was very upbeat and joyful, even. Marvin's version was DRAMATIC, almost as if SOMETHING SERIOUS was about to take place. You could hear/feel the tension/anguish in his voice. He was like an actor fully immersing himself in a role.
Roger's version was well, Roger - his own unique, funky take on a classic. [Edited 11/7/06 0:53am] My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

Im going to go with Gladys. An hour from now, I'll say Marvin.

Talk about more than just a cover....These two totally different arrangements are barely the same song. Both are great classics but I love the more somber mood of Marvin's rather than Gladys, which is so upbeat is almost doesn't make sense.

I'm most familiar with Marvin's version and I love his voice, so I have to say:
Marvin | |
