I am such a huge fan of these guys. In case some of you are wondering who the hell I am talking about...The Band used to be Bob Dylan's backing band when he decided to go electric back in the mid 60s. They then broke out on their own after creating some crazy, but oddly rustic, and truly original music with Dylan in their house...Big Pink...one of their best known tunes, The Weight was on Music from Big Pink...their debut. They then followed that one up with the "Brown Album" which is one of my all time favorite albums of all time. This one included Up on Cripple Creek and The Night The Drove Ole Dixie Down. Also love Stage Fright, Northern Lights Southern Cross, and of course, The Last Waltz (Rick Danko's solo album from 77 is another gem but incredibly hard to find).

Just wondering if there are any fellow Orgers that are also fans of these guys. Lets talk about Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson (the heart of this group imo), Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson...The Band!

...I lost track of them after their first 3 albums (which are excellent).

My parents/uncle/aunties like that Music From Big Pink, and it's a good album.

The footage from the Scorsese Dylan documentary is priceless. Great band.

Levon Helm has been doing shows at his home studio in the Catskills. Called the Midnight Ramble, he sells tickets on-line to the small public events. You basically go out to his house and watch bands. Special guests are always sitting in, apparently.

It was actually the other way around for me. I have been a fan of The Band since high school after seeing the Last Waltz in a film class. After wearing the Last Waltz album out, I started exploring the other artists involved in that show, like Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Dr John, and Paul Butterfield (I was already into Joni...try to guess why). But believe me The Band's music, especially Big Pink and the Brown Album get better and better with each listen. You need them to sink in and get into your brain a bit then you are hooked for life.

The Last Waltz is in the top ten music doc of all time. I was a bit surprised when I found out they were based in Canada. Just goes to show.....

And interesting in-band drama regarding Robbie Robertsons ego etc. Oh and Levon Helm is a badass name.

I've been wanting to pick up the Anthology since there is a lot on there I am missing. Ah...maybe someday.
