People always talk about their music, but their lyrics are great, too.

As I'm learnig Kid Charlemagne I sing the lyrics:

"From the hills the stuff was laced with kerosene
but yours was kitchen clean
everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motorhome
every A-Frame had your number on the wall
you must have had it all
you'd go to LA on a dare & you'd go it alone"

Now, they've never written an "Imagine" type anthem, but those lyrics really roll off the tongue, and they enhance the music, painting a clear picture in a clever way
[Edited 11/3/06 15:35pm]

And they manage to hang those lyrics on such wonderful memorable melodies!!

I love IGY from The Nightfly album

Standing tough under stars and stripes
We can tell
This dreams in sight
You've got to admit it
At this point in time that it's clear
The future looks bright
On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by seventy-six we'll be A.O.K

Fantastic! The Nightfly is the greatest album Steely Dan never did!! worship

Exactly. That's why their package is so complete.
The true test is whether they can stand alone on the page.
Very clearly crafted vignettes utilizing interesting characters.

One of my favorite few stanzas comes from Donald Fagen's Kamakiriad album...

Our home is just like any other
We're grillin' burgers on the back lawn
Some time goes by
We fall asleep with the TV on
I dream about a laughing angel
Then the laugh becomes a furious whine
Look out fellas
It's shredding time

Chorus:
They're mixing with the population
A virus wearing pumps and pearls
Lord help the lonely guys
Hooked by those hungry eyes
Here come Tomorrow's Girls
Tomorrow's Girls

~Tomorrow's Girls

...Simple, but a unique and effective description.

Actually, that's a Donald Fagen album.

For a late-nite talk-show junkie like myself, these lyrics always rang true...

I'm Lester the Nightfly
Hello Baton Rouge
Won't you turn your radio down
Respect the seven second delay we use

So you say there's a race
Of men in the trees
You're for tough legislation
Thanks for calling
I wait all night for calls like these

With jazz and conversation
From the foot of Mt. Belzoni
Sweet music
Tonight the night is mine
Late line 'til the sun comes through the skylight

Jumping on the bandwagon and goin' with Aja. I've listened to that album SO many times. It's great to listen to on long drives and sunny Sunday mornings.

I painted the album cover once just for fun, it's on the wall back at my old house.

An association I never made.

I'm listening to Katy Lied, and the vocals on Rose Darling are very reminiscent of Dylan's.

Steely Dan is so smooth it's interesting to think they could be influenced by someone so ragged, but then, they didn't leave much out in terms of influence.

To me it's rock/pop music with a jazz sensibility.

A very on the money description.

The only thing missing is a classic lead vocalist.
But when you think about the persona Becker/Fagen have created to write through, Donald Fagen's voice is a perfect fit.
This guy that's much smarter that the hipster crowd he's chosen to hang out with, hence the sharp behavioral observations (including of himself).
The out of his league women (and because of his insecurities, he inevitably ends up with the beautiful loonies) and the shaky/shady male characters that inhabit the classy vignettes.

Since Fagen doesn't have a technically great voice and can't adlib well (but can sing in tune), it forces them to create the precise and memorable melodies for him to work within.

I like his voice, but it works best double tracked or with backup singers. Alone you can hear it's a bit weak.

The backup singers make up for the missing link of a classic lead vocalist for sure.
But his "weak" voice fits the persona perfectly.

It makes you pay attention to the lyrics rather than some vocal histrionics.

Katy Lied was the first album I bought from the group, so there's the sentimental thing. I dig Can't Buy A Thrill if for no other reason, "Reelin In The Years" is on there. Aja and Pretzel Logic are great albums. Aja is probably their "One" though. At least their most popular. I like "Katy Lied".
