Favorite Steely Dan LP I've been learning to play Kid Charlemagne, and it just makes me appreciate how great Steely Dan are.
For years my favorite of their albums was Aja, but they've got a few contenders. Pretzel Logic is an amazing collection of songs, and Katy Lied. Even the new stuff, like Two Against Nature. What's you're favorite album/song by the Dan? Right now, I pick Aja/Kid Charlemagne My Legacy

To me Aja stands out as an album as opposed to a collection of songs. It holds together the best. Of course, it's a great collection of songs, too. My Legacy

Most folks know how I feel about this group.
They epitomize almost everything I look for in Pop music. I love all their albums for different reasons. But i'm gonna go against the grain here a bit and make what some may consider an unlikely choice.

I first got my taste of Steely Dan, as a little kid. I remember hearing, "Do it again", for the first time and I was hooked. I was about 6 or 7 years old and I had never heard anything like that in my life. The vibe was just different. My love for them grow even more once I heard tracks like, Aja, Peg, and my brother's personal favorite, Decon Blue. Donald Fagen has got to be one of the greatest story tellers of our time. It is almost as if you are there with him. My favorite albums by them are, Aja, Two against Nature, Pretzel Logic and Katie Lied. Even their solo material is great. I just picked up Donald's "Morph the Cat". This is one of the best albums of last year. They will certainly go down as one of the greatest song writing teams in history. ...mmmmm.....I think mine is still gonna be Aja... It's funny though--back in the eighties, when cassettes were everywhere, MCA would put out these 2 on 1 cassettes - one album would be on side A, while a second album would be on the B side. Anyway, they had Aja and Gaucho as a two-sided cassette, so for years I listened to Aja and Gaucho as if they were one long album! Lately, though, I've been playing a lot of Katy Lied, particularly for Your Gold Teeth II( Love That tune!!!), Bad Sneakers, Dr Wu, and Everyone's Gone To The Movies....

... [Edited 11/3/06 11:54am] I remember the last S.D. thread u & I agreed on this album and particularly "Your Gold Teeth II" the intro and the break in the middle made me hooked to this song. "Everyone's Gone to th Movies" is flat out creepy!! A song that sounds like it was taken from a movie. 
Others: Aja/Home at Last & I've Got the News (slept on classic songs to me) Guacho/ My Rival (great detective song!!) although I was hooked to "Glamour Profession"when I first heard it. [Edited 11/3/06 12:55pm] |

... [Edited 11/3/06 11:54am] I used to hate Dr. Wu, but lately I can't get it out of my head. I think initially the song didn't have the flash that I admired in them (kind of like Gaucho) but the melody is so beautiful. My Legacy

I have genuine affection for every album Steely Dan have ever done. To me it's rock/pop music with a jazz sensibility. I love how the instrumental solo's are as integral to the songs as the sung lyrics. I mean Skunk Baxters breaks in My Old School or Phil Woods alto on Doctor Wu not to mention Wayne Shorter on Aja
My two favorite albums are probably Countdown To Ecstacy (best early album) and Aja best later one. I did find it hard to get on with Two Against Nature at first but it's grown on me recently. Everything Must Go is a solid album. I love Donald Fagens solo work though especially 'The Nightfly' and 'Morph The Cat' if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

I agree...I love the fact that so many great musicians have participated in those sessions. 'Course, Donald and Walter are such perfectionists( or at least intense sticklers for the particular sound they're looking for) that a lot of musicians considered it a badge of honor to make the final cut on a Dan album, ...

People always talk about their music, but their lyrics are great, too.
As I'm learnig Kid Charlemagne I sing the lyrics: "From the hills the stuff was laced with kerosene but yours was kitchen clean everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motorhome every A-Frame had your number on the wall you must have had it all you'd go to LA on a dare & you'd go it alone" Now, they've never written an "Imagine" type anthem, but those lyrics really roll off the tongue, and they enhance the music, painting a clear picture in a clever way [Edited 11/3/06 15:35pm] My Legacy
