Props to the LATIN GRAMMY's for not giving in Well this night was all about Shakira, i forget how many she won, but the show as whole was really good, her performance to was smoking. The Latin grammys were in NYC this year at madison square garden and also back on the Univision network, for a few years it was on CBS, which was a joke, artists forced to speak english in award speeches and also because it was on CBS we would have to have Justin Timberlake,Jessica Simpson,Halle Berry and other american celebs take up space that could have been for LATIN ARTISTS. Well the return to the Univision network was the best move since, more people watch that network than any major network. Also the Latin community is very favorable to longevity, if you look at the stars in Latin Music they are mostly 30+ , and the show itself didnt cater to the younger crowd just in case they were watching, this is the biggest problem with the Grammies they tend to think of who kids would watch, news for the GRAMMYS this year, kids dont watch! So on the Latin Grammies, Reggaeton which has exploded, was given one performance, Unfair? No, because nothing should be catered to just because its sells this year. This is another problem with the "Grammys", they feel they always have to nominate an album from every genre to be fair, how about nominating the best ones, and not just saying, "oh we need a rock one, we need a rap one", hopefully they will take the lead of the Latin Grammys. Doesn't Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera sometimes go to these awards? They're American, so what's wrong with Justin Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, Halle Berry etc going? Shakira goes to the American Grammys and so do other South American artists.

First Shakira is nominated in POP categories thats why she is at the American Grammys. The issue is that the Latin Grammys was giving time to American artists and cutting out Latin artists at the Latin Grammys when it was airing on CBS, basically trying to americanize the Latin Grammys. Another reason i gotta give props to the Latin Grammys and artists, the fact that everyone was so damn classy, and humbled by this event, when someone lost they didnt jump on stage and say how they shoulda won because they paid more money for their video or album. There was none of that, respect to longevity also which to me is the most important thing. Theres also alot of great Latin albums/artists out right now, i mean the new Paulina Rubio is one of my favorite cds of 2006, Juanes, alejandro sanz, thalia, shakira, a band called ha*ash, sin bandera, carlos vives and many more, plus some great LIVE instruments going on too! thats a plus "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

britney maybe...but i think beyonce has a very culture specific audience and does her own thing as it relates to her roots...sort of like comparing apples and oranges, even though both ladies are lovely, big of hair, and have the abs of hell... that being said, i dig shakira. i was a fan long before she made her foray into english music making and actually don't care for her latter projects that much in comparson to the spanish language records. her english language pop ventures always feel too forced and contrived to me, and don't allow her gifts to shine through, imo...and on a typically superficial ottensen fashion note, i am SOOO glad that she dumped that platinum blond hair from a few years back ...that look was waaay too harsh for such a face as pretty as hers...

I didn't catch it this year, but I usually love watching the Latin Grammy's--whether in English or Spanish.
I discovered Ozomatli and Maria Rita through that show. I really think the performances are usually great.

I'm sorry, but as an old school Latin music fan, I am extremely underwhelmed by today's most popular Latin "artists." I am hesitant to call the artists and can't even begin to call them musicians. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

what's so special about Latin music that it deserves its own Grammy Awards anyway? can't compete with the rest of the field?
i mean, we don't have the Country Grammys (the CMA's are a different group), or the Heavy Metal Grammys or the Hip Hop Grammys or the Classical Grammys or the Comedy Album Grammys.... [Edited 11/5/06 2:25am] There is a lot more Latin music out there than what is acknowledged on the regular grammys. We're talking about music from more than an entire continent being covered by six awards on the regular show. Can't say that for those other types of music you mentioned.

No, but not everything is fair in that regard. It is an American institution, not responsible for making sure that every country is represented. There are international awards, etc. for that kind of thing, even within the Grammys. Why should all the types of Latin music be represented when all of the types of other music is not. This isn't about everyone being recognized. It's an awards competition. Not everyone goes home happy. "The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life. " -- Edith Massey in Female Trouble

Well in terms of american music there are plenty of forums where it is acknowledged, with shows like the CMA's, AMA's, Vibe Awards, Source Awards, BET awards, Soul train Awards, countless mtv shows, there is plenty of recognition going towards those genres. At the Grammys, the Latin Music field has been shrunk to 4 awards, and gets no airtime on the event, despite it being the largest population and growing genre of music. Also there are many types of Latin Music, there is Pop/Rock, Salsa, merengue/Tropical, Tejano/Mexican,and now Reggaeton, so i think it is fair that it gets its own show.
